SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The Yellowjacket women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep over Concordia with a thrilling 4-3 victory Saturday at Wessman Arena.
Brynn MacLean's (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) two-goal performance and timely scoring lifted UWS past the Cobbers.
The victory improved the Yellowjackets' record to 6-6-2 overall and 1-3-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play as they continue to build momentum heading deeper into the season.
MacLean scored twice, while
Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) also had a two-point game collecting two assists.
Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) was back in the net for the Yellowjackets-she turned aside 26 Cobber shots, preserving the win and improving her season record to 3-3-1.
Game Notes
- Less than two minutes into the game, MacLean opened the scoring off a perfect pass from Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) from the right corner, firing a one-timer past the goaltender.
- Concordia tied it midway through the period when Jerica Friese scored, assisted by Memphis Mertens and Morgan Sauvageau.
- Just 30 seconds into the second period, Gaby Andreacchi (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick) restored UWS's lead by converting a pass from Booth in front of the net.
- Concordia responded with a power-play goal from Sauvageau around the sixth-minute mark to even the score at 2-2.
- A minute later, MacLean struck again, taking a backhand pass from Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) in the neutral zone, flying into the Cobber zone and fired a shot between the defenders, and scoring to reclaim the lead.
- Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) extended the Yellowjackets' advantage 41 seconds into the third period, wrapping the puck around the net after receiving a feed from Booth.
- With under two minutes left, Concordia pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, and Friese capitalized on a rebound from the point to cut the lead to 4-3, but UWS held strong to secure the win.
- The Yellowjackets were 0-4 on the powerplay while Concordia was 1-5.
- The Cobbers were outshot by the Yellowjackets 33-29.
The Yellowjackets are back in action January 3-4 when they travel to Marian University for the Fondy Pot Invitational. They kick off the tournament against Marian on Friday, with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
