Women’s Basketball Suffers 72-58 Loss to Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team ventured a bit farther away from Superior Saturday, entering Luther Field House on the campus of Luther College. After taking a loss to Viterbo Friday, the 'Jackets looked to jump back into the win column.

The Norse, however, placed a 22-point first quarter and limited the Yellowjackets to just seven of their own. Despite UWS outscoring the Norse in the second and fourth quarters, Luther managed to come away with the 72-58 win.

Game Notes
  • The Norse took advantage of Yellowjacket misses early on, scoring 14 unanswered points in over six minutes. Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) broke the scoreless streak with a three pointer, while Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis.) and Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) garnered layups to end the quarter.
  • Latvala drew a foul from the Norse's Teagan Schaefer as the second quarter got underway, and she finished both free throws. Later Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) was sent a pass from MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) and sunk a shot beyond the arc.
  • UWS came within eight points, but Luther pushed ahead and regained a ten-point lead (33-23) before the end of the second.
  • As the third began Besonen missed a layup inside the paint, but Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) was in the right position as she grabbed the offensive board and claimed a pair of points.
  • As the Norse began to push ahead, Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy) checked into the game and finished a layup and a midrange jumper.
  • The 'Jackets scored a game-best 19 points in the final quarter, but the damage was already done as Luther claimed the victory at home.
  • Turnovers were once again costly for UWS, as the Norse scored 18 points compared to Superior's five.
  • Leading the way for UW-Superior was Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls), who scored 15 points once again while adding six rebounds.
  • Ferstl once again posted 13 boards, repeating her performance from Friday and accounting for nearly a third of the 'Jackets' rebounds.

The Yellowjackets (3-7) play their final game of the 2024 calendar year on the road, taking on MSOE before entering Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play in the new year. The opening tipoff inside the Kern Center is set for 1 p.m. in Milwaukee.
