FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Yellowjacket women's hockey team opened 2025 with a commanding 6-2 victory over Marian University at the Blue Line Family Ice Center on Friday night.
The victory improved the Yellowjackets' record to 7-6-2 overall and 1-3-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), as they look to build momentum heading into the second half of the season.
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) led the offense with two goals and one assist, while
Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and
Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) each tallied a goal and an assist in the game.
Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) was in the net for the Yellowjackets and she turned aside 21 Saber shots, earning the win and improving her season record to 4-3-1.
Game Notes
- Marian opened the scoring at the 3:56 mark of the first period when Piper Miller found the back of the net on a quick even-strength play.
- UWS responded less than four minutes later with Emma Kligora's (Milton, Wis./Milton) first collegiate goal, assisted by Stacy Steiner (Janesville, Wis./Craig) to tie the game at 1-1.
- Late in the first, Brynn MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) gave UWS A 2-1 lead, taking a pass from Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) and banking a shot in off the Marian goaltender.
- Marian managed to tie it again with 1:46 remaining in the first period.
- In the second period, Scherling split the defense as she went down on a breakaway and scored a shorthanded goal at 15:28 to give UWS a 3-2 edge, converting a feed from Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) and Maddie Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing).
- The Yellowjackets broke the game open in the third period, netting three unanswered goals. Booth scored on a power play at 6:37, followed by Hoops' two tallies at 11:17 and 14:02, both on the power play.
- UWS dominated the faceoff circle, winning 71.9% of draws.
The Yellowjackets return to the ice Saturday for the championship game of the Fondy Pot Invitational, facing off against UW-Stevens Point. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m.
