EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team faced their second Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) of the week Saturday, this time traveling to Eau Claire to take on the Blugolds in their new facility, the Sonnentag Center.
Both squads kept things close until the Yellowjackets pushed the pace, leading by seven going into halftime. Eau Claire came out of the break and outscored UWS in both quarters, ultimately emerging to a 58-56 win.
Game Notes
- Scoring the Yellowjackets' first four points was MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset), securing a jumper and logging two free throws after drawing an early foul.
- Back-to-back three pointers from Leccia and Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) aided Superior's early attack, but the Blugolds responded and came back within two at 15-13 to close the first.
- The 'Jackets and Eau Claire kept trading points throughout the second, but a jumper from Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) and Emily Coonrod (Hastings, Minn./Randolph) helped push Superior in front. Besonen sent a feed to Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis.) as she nailed a shot beyond the arc before Elsa Olson's (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) back-to-back buckets placed a 10-point cushion at 31-21.
- In the third quarter, UWEC kept applying pressure and knotted the game at 40-40. Jumpers from Besonen and Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) gave UWS the edge before the Blugolds countered, but Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) logged a rebound and completed the fastbreak layup at 46-42 heading into the final frame.
- UW-Superior saw points from Olson, Ferstl and Peterson early in the fourth quarter. Eau Claire utilized a three pointer, followed by two layups that saw them lead 58-56 with six seconds remaining, and they would fend off the 'Jackets to secure the home victory.
- Dobson led the scoring with 12 points, along with two assists and six rebounds. Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis.) displayed a balanced attack as well, accounting for eight points and six rebounds.
- Olson also added eight points, while Leccia and Besonen garnered seven on the evening.
The Yellowjackets will shift their focus to Friday, where they travel to R.W. Beggs Gymnasium to take on Viterbo. Action is set to commence at 5:30 p.m.
