Women’s Basketball Caps Regular Season with 75-63 Victory Over Bethany Lutheran

MANKATO, Minn. – Less than 24 hours after the Yellowjacket women's basketball team captured the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship, they traveled to Mankato, Minn. to finish the regular season slate versus Bethany Lutheran.
 
Despite the Vikings staying neck-and-neck with the 'Jackets, they were unable to finish the game as UWS continued its winning ways Saturday, winning by a score of 75-63.
 
UW-Superior finished the regular season 17-8 overall (.680) and a 13-1 record (.929) in UMAC action.
 
Game Notes
  • The 'Jackets will carry a nine-game winning streak into the semifinal game on Wednesday.
  • Playing a full 40 minutes, Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) was 9-13 (69.2 percent) from field goal range and a perfect 5-5 from the line, finishing her afternoon with 24 points.
  • Ferstl put together a strong showing in her 19 minutes on the hardwood, scoring 21 points and six rebounds. 20 points came from midrange while the final point came at the free throw line.
  • Elsa Olson's (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) performance was highlighted by going 4-4 from field goal range, 2-2 from beyond the arc and 2-2 from the free throw line for 12 points. She also contributed four rebounds.
  • Besonen, Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) and MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) each ended with five rebounds, while Olson, Erika Mattson (Ely, Minn./Ely Memorial) and Hannah Hause (Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) contributed four each.
  • UWS outscored the Vikings in three-of-four quarters, scoring a game-high 24 in the fourth.
  • Bethany Lutheran saw four players score ten or more points, including Gianna Klarenbeek, Juliana Ewald, Megan Wegner and Lexiss Trygg.
  • Ashanti Boykin for the Vikings finished with a game-high ten rebounds.
  • The Yellowjackets shot a combined 48.3 percent from the field while the Vikings shot 32.8 percent.
 
The Yellowjackets will now set their sights on the UMAC semifinal game against North Central. The opening tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
