ALBERT LEA, Minn. – Yellowjacket tennis coach
CeeJay Schaffner made a late addition to his women's tennis schedule this week, putting Simpson College on the schedule for Saturday. The Yellowjackets were already in southern Minnesota for a pair of matches Sunday, so the addition of the Simpson match gives the Yellowjackets another day of competition prior to their trip to Florida.
Â
The addition to the schedule was a good one, as the Yellowjackets rolled past the Storm 9-0 at Albert Lea (Minn.) High School Saturday afternoon.
Â
With the win, the Yellowjackets (5-5, 0-0 UMAC) have now won two matches in a row and brought their record back to the .500 mark.
Â
The Yellowjackets set the tone early, sweeping all three doubles matches, with the most convincing win coming courtesy of
Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) and
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), who got the win at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
Â
In singles play the Yellowjackets won all six matches in straight sets, with Simpson putting up the biggest fight at No. 1 singles. There,
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) eked out a 7-5 win in the first set before rolling to a 6-1 win in the second set to seal the match.
Â
Match Notes
- Tejada teamed up with Maya Haupt (Nuertingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg/Hoelderlin Gymnasium Nuertingen) at No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-5 win. They're now 3-3 on the year in doubles play.
- Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Stella Harris (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) needed only 35 minutes to get the win at No. 2 doubles, 8-4 over Simpson's duo of Savanna Walls and Korynna Olson.
- Wilfong was laser sharp Saturday. Not only did she get a shutout win at No. 3 doubles, but she was perfect at No. 6 singles, winning her match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
- At. No. 5 singles Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) was impressive, rolling 6-1, 6-2.
- Haupt won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, while Curtis got the win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
- Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) picked up another win at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
- Tejada, Haupt and Wilfong each earned their sixth wins of the season in singles play.
