DULUTH, Minn. – Earlier this season, the Yellowjacket women's team made history when it defeated the University of Northwestern for the first time in program history.
Â
Much was made of the win at the time, as in addition to the history, the victory blew open the door for the Yellowjackets to potentially win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) North Division Championship.
Â
The opportunity to finish off the regular season run, and secure the title, came Saturday when the Yellowjackets hosted Minnesota Morris in the regular season finale.
Â
And not to minimize the victory over Northwestern, but this little bit of history will prove to be much more meaningful.
The Yellowjackets swept the doubles matches and continued their roll in singles play, on the way to an 8-1 rout over the Cougars at the Duluth Indoor Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.
Â
With the win, the Yellowjackets (15-8, 5-0 UMAC) not only won the UMAC North Division title for the first time in program history, but they also ensured they will go into next week's UMAC Championships as a No. 1 seed.
Â
With a commanding 4-0 lead,
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) closed out a straight-sets win, defeating Morris' Valerie Gall 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for the Yellowjackets and secure the title. The victory was the second of the day for Tejada. She also teamed up with
Maya Haupt (Nuertingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg/Hoelderlin Gymnasium Nuertingen) to roll over Morris' duo of Kiley Rodarmel and Allison Bruhn, 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Â
Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and
Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) teamed up for an 8-4 win over Morris' Valerie Gall and Marybeth Tautges at No. 2 doubles, while
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles over the Cougars' Ava Weber and Mariah Mireles.
Â
In singles action, four of the five wins for the Yellowjackets came in straight sets.
