SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket softball team took the field on Tuesday afternoon facing Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opponent Northwestern at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex for its final home of the 2024 regular season.
After splitting with Northwestern on Saturday: winning 6-5 win and falling 9-1 in six innings, the Yellowjackets took the third game and the three-games series with a 4-3 win. After Tuesday's win the Yellowjackets now have an overall record of 22-11 and 11-4 in conference.
With the first three innings remaining scoreless, the first run of the game came from the Eagles as they scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. The Yellowjackets would hit right back in the bottom of the fourth when
Zoe Thomson (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) hit a homerun to the left field, ending the fourth inning 1-1.
Games Notes
- Northwestern taking the lead back 2-1 in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly out to right field scoring Emma Morrissey.
- For the Eagles Kate Beer hit a single to shortstop, to score Briar Armatoski, to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead to end the top of the fifth inning.
- Thomson hit her fourth homerun of the season.
- In the fifth inning, down 3-1 pinch hitter Jessica Jacobson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Southern Door) singled to left center for an RBI, scoring Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) to close the gap 3-2.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, Swartz singled down the left field line for an RBI. Swartz would advance MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) to second while driving Ellie Macal (Winona, Minn./Cotter) home to tie the game 3-3.
- Pinch hitting for the Yellowjackets was Izzy Lingle (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw). Lingle would double down the right field line for an RBI, advancing Swartz to third while driving Leccia home for the game-winning run, to make it a 4-3 game.
- Getting the start in the circle for the Yellowjackets was Bella Garley (Albuquerque, N.M./Porter (Tex.)). Garley would pitch 4.2 innings before Swartz would come in for the last 2.1 innings.
- Swartz is credited with the win in the circle, improving her record to 7-2.
Traveling to Bethany Lutheran for more UMAC play, the Yellowjackets are set for a three-game series with the Vikings. Friday, May 3 the first pitch at the BLC Softball Field is set for 5:30 p.m. For a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4 the first game is set for noon with the second game to follow for a 2 p.m. start.
