Yellowjackets Slowed by Saint Mary's, 6-3

WINONA, Minn. – Saturday, the Yellowjacket women's tennis team rode the momentum it built with a successful swing through Florida back into play in the Upper Midwest, edging Cornell College for its fourth win in a row.
 
Things got a little tougher for the 'Jackets Sunday, as they moved from Rochester to Winona to take on Saint Mary's. The Cardinals came into the match looking to get back in the win column after losing two-of-three.
 
UWS took one of the two matches in doubles play, but couldn't close the gap in singles action and fell to Saint Mary's 6-3 at Winona Tennis Center.
 
The loss snaps the Yellowjacket winning streak and drops their record to 10-8 for the season.
 
Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) won a thrilling match at No. 3 doubles, defeating the Saint Mary's pair of Ella Boomgaarden and Peyton Buerman 8-7.
 
In singles play, Maya Haupt (Nuertingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg/Hoelderlin Gymnasium Nuertingen) continued her strong first season with the Yellowjackets, winning at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0 over the Cardinals' Emily Henderson.
 
The other win for the Yellowjackets Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) at No. 4 singles, where she defeated Elena Ruzevich 6-3, 7-5.
 
Match Notes
  • The win for Haupt upped her record for the year to 12-6 in singles play.
  • Drew and Jonas are now 3-0 in doubles play.
  • Drew took the first set in her match at No. 6 singles, 6-4, before falling 3-6 in the second set. Buerman won he exciting tiebreaker, 10-8, to win the match.
  • Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) also went to a tiebreaker at No. 4 singles. After taking the first set 7-5, the Cardinals' Emily Dondelinger won the second set 6-1 before winning the tiebreaker 10-8.
  • Haupt and Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) lost 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, dropping their record for the year to 7-7.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is an exhibition match against Division II Minnesota Duluth. The Yellowjackets and Bulldogs will compete Thursday, April 11 at the Bulldog Outdoor Tennis Courts, on the Minnesota Duluth campus. The first serve is set for 4 p.m.
