Yellowjackets Fall to Principia, 5-1 in UMAC Title Match

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The historic run for the Yellowjacket women's tennis team came to an end Saturday, in the championship match of the 2024 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tennis Championships.

Friday, the Yellowjackets advanced to the title match with a 5-2 win over Greenville, marking the first time in program history the Yellowjackets were playing for a conference championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament.

The Yellowjackets were playing their best tennis of the year down the stretch, but in the end it wasn't enough as Principia downed the Yellowjackets 5-1 to take the UMAC title.

The loss brings the Yellowjackets' 2023-24 season to an end.

Saturday unfolded in much the same was as Friday did, with the Yellowjackets trailing 2-1 after doubles play. Like Friday, the Yellowjacket duo of Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) earned the win, defeating Principia's Saray Hernandez Cisneros and Kimberley Peterson 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, the Yellowjackets looked poised to make a move similar to what they did Friday, but Principia got the wins they needed to clinch the match.

Match Notes

  • For the season, Drew was 12-4 in doubles play.
  • At No. 1 singles, Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) took the opening set 6-3 before dropping the second. The third set was just beginning when Principia clinched the match.
