DULUTH, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team kicked off their regular season slate Friday night at Public School Stadium. Opening the season up with former Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (WIAC) foe UW-La Crosse, the Yellowjackets would drop their season opener 5-0.
The Yellowjackets concluded their 2023 season with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to UW-La Crosse in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Although the result was not in their favor, statistically and tactically the Yellowjackets performed better tonight compared to their previous match up with UWL.
The Eagles made their presence felt early, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes of the first half to take an early lead 2-0 and would end the first half up 3-0. The Eagles would find the back of the net two more times in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper,
Quinn Clark (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) got the start in net for the Yellowjackets and would tally 12 saves on the night.
Game Notes
- UW-La Crosse came out of the gates strong; Jillian Sawadski would net the first goal of the night in the third minute giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Lindsey Szydmanski would be credited with the assist.
- Minutes later for UWL, Aubree Caya would land the second goal of the night giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
- Alexis McMahon increased the UWL lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 18th minute.
- With an early jump in the second half less than a minute in, Ellie Arndt would net the fourth goal for the Eagles.
- Arndt would strike minutes later for her second of the night giving the Eagles a 5-0 lead in the 49th minute.
- Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko), Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) and Mercedes Burmeister (New Germany, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) would each be credited with a shot on net tonight for a team total of three.
The Yellowjackets are back in action at home on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they will host UW-River Falls. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
