Balanced Attack Helps Yellowjacket Shut Out Morris

MORRIS, Minn. – The Yellowjacket men's soccer team opened conference play with a dominating performance against North Central Wednesday. Putting eight goals on the board, the effort marked the largest offensive output of the year for the Yellowjackets, and showed the early-season struggle to score was now firmly in the rearview mirror.

Saturday afternoon, the Yellowjackets were back on the pitch, taking on Minnesota Morris in the second Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest of the young season. And once again, the Yellowjacket offense showed up in a big way.

The 'Jackets scored four times in the opening half and rolled to a 6-0 shutout of Morris a Cougar Field.

With the win, the Yellowjackets (3-2-2, 2-0-0 UMAC) move above the .500 mark for the first time during the 2024 season.

The Yellowjackets jumped on the Cougars early, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes and four times in the opening half. Jake Kidd (Superior, Wis./Superior) go things started for the Yellowjackets, scoring his second goal of the campaign just 6:19 in. Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) would score his second of the year just over three minutes later, and the Yellowjackets were off to the races.

Patrick Sessions (Brighton, England/Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College) made the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and made 1 save in 78 minutes of action before yielding the goal to Carter Lansdale (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), who finished out the match. The appearance was just the second carer game for Lansdale.

Match Notes
  • With the Yellowjackets up by a pair, Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma), on a feed from Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy), made it a 3-0 Yellowjacket lead in the 22nd minute.
  • It was the second game in a row with a goal for Oliveira.
  • Before the first half closed out, the Yellowjackets extended the lead. Kyle Massingham (Nuneaton, England/Future Pro College) scored his third goal of the year at 31:58 to make it 4-0 at the break.
  • Midway through the second half the 'Jackets made it 5-0 when Ryan Tomsche (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) scored his first goal of the year.
  • Melvin Andersson (Kalmar, Sweden/Stagneliusskolan) scored his first goal as a Yellowjacket with under five minutes to play in the match to make it a 6-0 Yellowjacket lead.
  • The Yellowjackets attempted 25 shots in the match, compared to just four for Minnesota Morris. Shots on goal favored the Yellowjackets 18-1.
  • With his one goal, one assist performance, Bellamy moved into a tie for the team scoring lead, something he shares with Massingham. Each has eight points on the year.
  • Saturday's game was the fifth career start in goal for Sessions.
  • The Yellowjackets now own a 17-3-1 mark all-time against Minnesota Morris, and they have won 11 matches in a row dating back to Oct. 28, 2017.
The Yellowjackets return to action Tuesday, Sept. 24 when they travel to St. Paul to take on Northwestern. The opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Reynolds Field.
