Volleyball Falls to Coe in Wartburg Invite Opener

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Yellowjacket volleyball team began day one of the 2024 Wartburg Invite, the final regular season tournament entered by head coach Lynne Deadrick before embarking on the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) slate.

Friday's opponent comes against a tough Coe squad, a team that is coming off the heels of winning an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) championship and making an NCAA Tournament appearance.

After falling in the first set 25-21, the 'Jackets came back to win set number two 26-24 before falling 25-19 in back-to-back sets to the Kohawks.

Match Notes
  • Action commenced with the Yellowjackets taking a 6-2 lead with kills from Ayla Oltmanns (Gilbert, Minn./Duluth East), Ella Kapus (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity).
  • The Kohawks mustered a comeback and took the lead at 18-15 but kills from Addy Gangl (Nashwauk, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) and Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) helped keep the 'Jackets close until Yellowjacket miscues helped push Coe ahead 25-21.
  • The closest set of the evening came in number two, as a total of 15 lead changes occurred.
  • Oltmanns and Gangl helped spearhead UW-Superior's offense early before Coe responded with kills and points of their own. Melissa Hoff (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) notched back-to-back points off assists from Gabi Schwirtz (Plato, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) before the Kohawks responded to retake control 12-11.
  • As the lead transitioned from one team to the other, the 'Jackets saw the majority of points from Kapus and Oltmanns. UWS came within one point at 24-21, but Tessa Casebolt delivered a kill to keep things alive. After Oltmanns took a feed from Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool), the Yellowjackets came within one point again, but this time Kapus delivered the final blow after receiving aid from Schwirtz, taking the set 26-24.
  • UWS leaped to a 5-2 lead early on, and maintained the third set lead until the Kohawks took advantage of Yellowjacket miscues. Sitting at 15-15, Coe scored six-out-of-seven points which aided their efforts to winning set number four, 25-19.
  • After a close start to set number four, Coe took an 8-7 lead and didn't look back. Despite efforts from Smith and Marena Saeger (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), the 'Jackets would fall 25-19 in the set and drop their tournament-opener by a 3-1 decision.
  • Oltmanns and Gangl tied for the match leaders in kills with 15, while Claude added 30 assists to her season total of 314.
  • Defensively the 'Jackets were led by none other, Jenna Anderson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji). She compiled 34 on the evening, while Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) added 22 and Claude scooped 11.

The Yellowjackets wrap up the Wartburg Invite Saturday, taking on Simpon and tournament-host Knights at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
