Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Emma Peterson, Sports Information Specialist

Yellowjacket Women Shutout Northwestern 2-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The UW-Superior women's soccer team continued with Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Tuesday afternoon. Competing on the road, the Yellowjackets' traveled to Reynolds Field where they faced the Eagles of Northwestern (Minn.) The  'Jackets would come out on top 2-0.

With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 5-4-0 overall and 3-0-0 in UMAC play.

Despite a back-and-forth first half, the Yellowjackets struck first when Lindrey Schendel (Longmount, Colo./Skyline) delivered a perfectly placed corner kick to Ava Giswold (Proctor, Minn./Proctor), who headed the ball into the bottom right corner. Giswold's goal, her first of the season, gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.
Yellowjacket goalkeeper Quinn Clark (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) got the start in net and finished with three saves. Two saves came in the first half while the other one came in the second half. Clark was credited with the win and is now 3-2-0 in net.

Match Notes
  • Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) doubled the Yellowjackets' lead just minutes after Giswold's opening goal. Holmquist made a great cross-field pass to Erika Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West), who quickly returned the ball to Holmquist in front of the net. Holmquist then fired a low shot to the left, beating the Eagles' goalkeeper and putting the Yellowjackets up 2-0.
  • Holmquist led the attack with seven shots, five of which were on target. Close behind, Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior) took six shots, also placing five on net. Karin Hill contributed five attempts, with one finding the target.
  • The Yellowjackets attempted 26 shots in the match to seven for the Eagles. Shots on goal also favorited the Yellowjackets, 13-3.
  • The fouls remained even throughout the match, the Yellowjackets tallied 10 to the Eagles nine.
  • The Yellowjackets were given all seven corner kicks in the match.
The Yellowjackets are back in action with more UMAC play Saturday, Sept. 28 when they will face Bethany Lutheran. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Scheels Field.
