DULUTH, Minn. – The gauntlet that has been the early-season schedule for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team saw them taking on another quality opponent in UW-Platteville when the Pioneers came to town Saturday.
The meeting was the first between the Yellowjackets and Pioneers since September 27, 2014, dating back to the days when UW-Superior was a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Despite the fact the teams are no longer in the same conference, Saturday's tilt produced feelings like the teams were still conference foes.
Saturday the Yellowjackets found the back of the net first and took a lead into halftime, but they were unable to hold on, as the Pioneers scored twice in the second half to defeat the Yellowjackets 2-1 at Public Schools Stadium.
The loss halts the two-match win streak for the Yellowjackets (2-2-0, 0-0-0 UMAC).
All-time leading scorer
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior) scored the lone goal for the Yellowjackets Saturday, who got five saves in goal from transfer goalkeeper
Elysabeth Lough (Las Vegas, Nev./Northwest Career and Technical Academy).
Match Notes
- The Yellowjackets got the scoring started midway through the first half when Wilson got a perfect feed from Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) at the left post and used her right foot to guide a shot past Platteville goalkeeper Madison Way, making it 1-0 in the 24th minute.
- For Wilson, the goal was her second of the season and the 70th of her illustrious career, making her the second player and first woman in UW-Superior soccer history to reach. She joins Yellowjacket men's stalwart Blake Perry in the category.
- Platteville drew even at the 53-minute mark when Jess Morawski converted a header off a corner kick.
- Minutes later, at 64:09, Lydia Smith got the game-winner for the Pioneers.
- Platteville's Ariana Lombardi assisted on both goals.
- The Pioneers attempted 14 shots in the match to eight for the Yellowjackets. Shots on goal also favored Platteville, 7-5.
- Saturday was one of the most physical matches of the year for the 'Jackets, with the teams combined for 14 fouls.
- Lough's record now stands at 1-1-0 on the year.
The Yellowjackets will be back home Tuesday when they host Gustavus Adolphus at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. The opening kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
