SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket soccer team continued its non-conference slate Tuesday, taking on Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (MIAC) Golden Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College.
For the second year in a row, the match site was adjusted. Both squads were originally scheduled to play in Superior before it was flipped to Saint Peter. Due to extreme heat in Southern Minnesota, the teams agreed to return to the Twin Ports area for the second meeting in school history.
The Gusties were fast paced throughout the match, and it paid off in the early stages of the second half. GAC found the back of the net in the 47th minute, and that's all they needed to secure the 1-0 victory in Superior.
Match Notes
- UWS found a few opportunities to strike early from Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), but the Gusties' goalie Katelyn Olson stood her ground and made multiple saves.
- On the contrary, Quinn Clark (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) thwarted multiple shots from her previous team, making eight saves in the first half alone.
- GAC tallied 11 shots in the first 45 minutes of action, which included eight shots on frame.
- In the final minutes of the first half, Clark made an excellent save after a Gustie rifled a shot to the bottom left corner.
- In the 47th minute of play, Hannah Cisar sent in a cross for Cambelle Waldspurger, firing one past Clark to take a one-goal lead.
- The Yellowjackets found chances to strike as the half went on, which included a free kick from the all-time leading scorer Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior) that nearly missed the top crossbar.
- With minutes remaining in the match Wilson entered the 18 and fired a pair of shots, but none were able to sneak past Olson, as she secured a clean sheet on the evening.
- Wilson led the 'Jackets with four total shots, while Hill finished with three.
- Clark ended her evening with 12 saves, while Olson stopped all six sent her way.
The Yellowjackets are set for another non-conference matchup before conference play picks up, taking on Concordia College Saturday. The opening kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. at Jake Christiansen Stadium in Moorhead, Minn.
