Volleyball Falls in Championship Match to Northwestern

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjacket volleyball team returned to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Championship match Saturday, following a 3-0 sweep to Bethany Lutheran on Wednesday. Superior had a tough task ahead of them, entering arguably one of the toughest gyms to play in.

Despite not having the home-court advantage, the Yellowjacket faithful inside Ericksen Center made it as close to Mertz Mortorelli Gym as possible, but at the end of the night, the Eagles emerged victorious with a 3-1 win to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Match Notes
  • The Eagles and Yellowjackets traded early blows and kept things close until a six-point rally proved to be the turning point, giving the Eagles a 25-14 win.
  • Superior came out of the break on the right foot, taking an early lead off kills from Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer), Marena Saeger (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), and Sidney Bader (Milltown, Wis./Unity).
  • Northwestern looked to make their move and was staring set point in the face until a kill from Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford), a service ace from Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior), an Eagle miscue and a Jones kill gave the Yellowjackets a 26-24 win in the second.
  • Both teams volleyed the lead and points in the third until a trio of Eagles points, followed by Superior miscues, gave the Eagles a 25-20 victory in the third.
  • The Eagle faithful guided their home squad in the fourth, as the Yellowjackets dropped the fourth 25-15.
  • Jones led offensively with 14 points, while Hohbein and Saeger finished with 10 and nine, respectively.
  • Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) distributed 24 assists throughout the contest, who was followed by Carlie Lohman (South Range, Wis./Superior) with 11.
  • Hering, Hohbein and Lohman each garnered 15, 14, and 11 digs, respectively.
  • Marley Aune, Ana Egge, and Anja Jarchow finished their evening with double-digit kills for the Eagles.

The Yellowjackets end the season with an overall record of 21-12.
