'Jackets Battle Loras Down To The Wire, Fall 68-65

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Yellowjacket men's basketball team played host to the Duhawks from Loras College on Saturday in search of their first win of the season. The Yellowjackets battled the Duhawks down to the wire but were unable to claim their first victory falling to Loras 68-65.

Game Notes:

  • Caiden Lecce (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic) started off the game scorching hot for the 'Jackets as he scored eight of the first 11 points for UWS.

  • The Yellowjackets jumped out to an 18-point lead as Nick Nordaune (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Landen Thomer (Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee) scored two buckets each to make it 26-8.

  • After a timeout to set up a press, the Duhawks were able to chip into the UWS lead, only trailing at the break 36-29.

  • In the second half, Loras slowly crawled their way back into the game as their defensive efforts were spearheaded by Deng Makeer, who allowed Damyen Jackson to give the Duhawks the 57-55 lead with 7:07 left on the clock.

  • From there the 'Jackets were never able to regain their lead as free throws iced the game for Loras.

  • Lecce led the offensive output with 21 points while Evan Bennett (Superior, Wis./Superior) was the only other 'Jackets in double figures with ten points. Adding to his offensive efforts Lecce anchored UWS defensively finishing with three steals.

  • Makeer led the Duhawks in scoring coming off the bench, adding 15 points. Jack Haynes scored 13 for Loras, and he also added 12 rebounds.

The Yellowjackets return to the court Wednesday night as they head to UW-Stout. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie, Wis.
