MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Yellowjacket women's basketball team won an overtime thriller versus the North Central Rams Saturday. Even though the Yellowjackets led in almost every statistical category, the Rams would put up a tough battle inside Clark-Danielson Gymnasium.
Game Notes
- The Yellowjackets started out this electric game with a quick two points with a layup from Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek).
- After a tying layup from the Rams, it would be another three minutes before the Yellowjackets would take the lead with a three-pointer from Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy).
- The first quarter would end 12-5, in favor of the Yellowjackets.
- The Rams would go into the second quarter full force, outscoring the Yellowjackets 13-6.
- Going into the final five minutes, Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) would hit a big trey to give the Yellowjackets a three-point lead.
- Going into halftime, the score would be tied at 18 apiece.
- The third quarter would be a back-and-forth battle as there were six lead changes. The Rams would start out with a trio of layups and a jumper, allowing for an eight-point advantage.
- The Yellowjackets made attempts to even the score, but the Rams remained dominant going into the final quarter.
- With just under six minutes to go, the Rams would have an eight-point lead, forcing the Yellowjackets to fasten their offense.
- With 57 seconds left to play, Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) would hit a three-pointer to give the Yellowjackets a one-point lead.
- After a late foul by the Rams, Besonen would make both free throws giving the Yellowjackets a three-point lead.
- With 17 seconds left, the Rams would hit a three pointer, tying the score at 48 apiece, sending the game into overtime.
- In less than a minute into overtime, Dehler would hit a shot giving the Yellowjackets an early lead.
- From then on, it would be all Yellowjackets. The Rams would go on to score only five points while the 'Jackets would log 12. Two late free throws from Dobson would seal Superior's fate as the victors.
- Olson led the offense with 17 points, while Besonen and Dobson were responsible for 14 and 13, respectively. Dobson led the 'Jackets with nine rebounds.
- Furthermore, Besonen logged her 1,000th point as a Yellowjacket in the contest.
- Dehler scored six points off the bench for Superior, adding six boards.
- Saturday's win marks four in a row for the Yellowjackets, all coming in UMAC action.
The Yellowjackets are set to take on the Northwestern Eagles in a midweek matchup Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m. at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
