MORRIS, Minn.—The Yellowjacket women's basketball team completed its final game of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Saturday, on the road against Minnesota Morris. With the win against the Cougars, the Yellowjackets have claimed the co-conference championship, as well as the No. 1 seed going into the UMAC tournament.
With the score going back and forth in all four quarters, the 'Jackets came out on top by two points. The final score was 65-63.
Game Notes
- The first quarter started as a back-and-forth battle, with the largest lead being five points. By the end of the quarter, the Yellowjackets found themselves behind by three points after the Cougars made a late run and scored three points thanks to a fouled three-point shot.
- No points were scored in the second quarter until a layup from Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy) got the 'Jackets within one point. Less than a minute later, Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) scored with a layup, putting the Yellowjackets ahead by one with under eight minutes left in the half.
- Halftime saw Superior down by four with a score of 30-26.
- Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) made a shot beyond the arc to pull UWS within one point.
- Less than one minute later, Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) made a shot in the paint, putting the Yellowjackets up by one point.
- By the end of the third quarter, UWS was ahead 44-39 with the final ten minutes approaching.
- The fourth quarter brought all the dramatics with the score tying up with less than four minutes to go.
- The Cougars were able to score two points from free throws, but not before another shot in the paint by Besonen tied the score at 56 all.
- Thanks to another pair of free throws from UMM, the Cougars were yet again ahead, this time by four.
- Thanks to a layup from Ferstl and a Besonen three-pointer, Superior was ahead by one with 1:30 left to play.
- With four seconds left and the score tied 63-63, Dobson was fouled, and her to free throws put the 'Jackets ahead for good.
- The Yellowjackets were able to close out the Cougar offense and secure the win with a final score of 65-63.
With this win, the Yellowjackets were crowned co-conference champions. Going into the UMAC conference tournament, Superior was granted the one seed, meaning they receive home-court advantage. The Yellowjackets are set to play Wednesday February 26 against Martin Luther at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
