Yellowjackets Edge Augustana in a Thriller, 4-3

DE PERE, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's tennis team jumped back into action last weekend, opening the spring semester portion of its schedule with a pair of non-conference wins. This weekend the Yellowjackets went back to the road, crossing the state for a pair of matches in non-conference play beginning Saturday.
 
In a roller coaster of a match, the Yellowjackets eked out a win, defeating Augustana College out of Rock Island, Ill. 4-3 at the Green Bay Tennis Center.
 
With things tied at 3-3, Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) closed out the win the win for the Yellowjackets, defeating Augustana's Mikayla Kelly at No. 5 singles. Jonas took the opening set 6-4 before dropping the second 7-6. Kelly won the second set by taking the tiebreaker 7-2. With each player taking a set the match went to a third-set tiebreaker, which Jonas won 10-5.
 
The Yellowjackets opened the day by taking the lone doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) were victorious at No. 2 doubles, defeating the Augustana duo of Natasha Gauerke and Hattie Timerman 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Jonas and Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) also won, defeating Maddy Harned and Kelly 6-3.
 
Match Notes
  • Augustana earned its points by getting wins at No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and No. 6 singles.
  • Curtis, the reigning Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week, also won her singles match, beating Gauerke at No. 3 singles 7-6 (7-2), 6-0.
  • At No. 4 singles, Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) rallied to earn a win. After dropping the first set to Harned by a 3-6 score, Araujo De Barros took the second set 6-3. Then in a barn burner, Araujo De Barros won the third-set tiebreaker 15-13 to take the match.
  • Araujo De Barros improved to 6-0 in singles play on the season.
  • Drew lost in straight sets a No. 6 singles, her first loss in singles play in 2024-25.
  • Curtis and Wilfong are now 2-0 on the year as doubles partners.
  • With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 6-1 on the year and extended their winning streak to five matches dating back to Oct. 19.
The Yellowjackets return to action Sunday morning when they will take on St. Norbert College. The opening serve is set for 8:30 a.m. at the Green Bay Tennis Center.
