SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's hockey team returned home Wednesday for their final non-conference contest before taking a nosedive into Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play from here on out. They would face Marian, a team they opened the year with an emphatic 7-0 win inside the Blue Line Family Ice Center.
Wednesday, despite falling behind in the first, came back and earned a 3-1 victory inside Wessman Arena and claimed their sixth win in a row.
Game Notes
- Marian scored the lone goal in the first period, as Caden Carlson sent a shot that snuck past Yellowjacket netminder Jan Skorpik (Brandýs nad Labem, Czechia/OA Prague) at 15:52.
- Superior responded in the second, rattling off three goals to lead 3-1. Just 17 seconds into the game, Evan Axell (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) fired an unassisted goal to level the score at 1-1.
- Alexey Yarmulnik (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) fired an unassisted goal at 6:56, and later at 10:48, took feeds from Axell and Dusty Bergstrom (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) for a 3-1 advantage.
- Skorpik secured the win in net, making 25-of-26 saves he saw. His record moves to 6-3-0.
- Three total penalties were called in the contest.
- Justin Dauphinais (Val Caron, Ontario/École Secondaire Catholique Horizon) led with four shots for Superior.
The 'Jackets have over a week off before they travel to the Hunt Arena to face UW-River Falls. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23.
