Yellowjackets Suffer Heartbreaker to Northwestern

SUPERIOR, Wis. - Coming off their win last Saturday, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team hosted Northwestern in a UMAC matchup. Despite trailing for much of the second half, the 'Jackets came all the way back to grab the lead in the final seconds. Northwestern was able to regain the lead with eight seconds left and beat Superior 69-68.

Game Notes:

  • The two teams traded buckets to start as Landen Thomer (Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee) and Hayden Quimby (Menasha, Wis./Xavier) scored early. The 'Jackets took their largest lead of the game at five points after Nick Nordaune (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Evan Bennett (Superior, Wis./Superior) hit three pointers to make the score 13-8.

  • Despite eight straight points from Rocco Paulson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) the Eagles found themselves in control the rest of the first half taking a seven-point lead into halftime.

  • The 'Jackets trailed by as many 14 points in the second half but cut the lead to eight as Eddie Mittermeyer (Cadott, Wis./McDonnell Central Catholic) and Bennett knocked down three pointers.

  • Superior was able to tie the game at 61 as three point makes by Bennett and Gage Braiedy (Mora, Minn./Mora) knotted it. Northwestern was able to rattle off six straight points taking a 67-61lead with three minutes remaining.

  • The Yellowjackets were able to rally as Thomer knocked down a three and Bennett made a layup getting the Eagle lead to one. Thomer was able to get the 'Jackets the lead as he tipped in a miss from Bennett to make the score 68-67 with 14 seconds left.

  • The Eagles were able to regain their lead as Jacob Hoefs made a layup with eight seconds left and the 'Jackets were never able to get another shot up.

  • Bennett led the 'Jackets in scoring with 18 points while Paulson finished with 14. Thomer secured his seventh double-double on the season, finishing with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
