Cougars Use Strong Third Quarter to Defeat Superior

MORRIS, Minn. - The Yellowjacket women's basketball team made trek west to take on Minnesota Morris on Saturday afternoon. Despite a hot start for Superior, a cold third quarter allowed the Cougars to take control and the win 59-48.

Game Notes:

  • The Yellowjackets started off the game on a 10-2 run, getting buckets from Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) and Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley).

  • After a Morris timeout the 'Jackets got their lead to 19-10 as Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) scored four points and Leccia banked in a three, but the Cougars made three free throws to make the score 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.

  • In the second quarter the two teams traded buckets as Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis./) and Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) scored, but Morris tied the game going into halftime at 27.

  • In the third, the Cougars only allowed one total point for Superior as they scored 15 to make the score 43-28.

  • Morris led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter, but three pointers from Schafer and Leccia got the lead to ten, but that is as close as Superior would get as the Cougars took the victory.

  • Carlson led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 14 points while Leccia filled in ten points.

  • The Yellowjackets grabbed 58 total rebounds in the game with 24 of them being offensive. Reott led the rebounding charge, having 13 in the game.

  • Maddy Grove led the Cougars on the offensive end, scoring 28 points.

The Yellowjackets (6-12, 3-2 UMAC) are back in action on Wednesday as they host Crown. Tip-off between the Yellowjackets and Polars is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Mortorelli Gymnasium.
