Superior Sweeps Beloit to Close WIAC Regular Season

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's hockey team hosted Beloit for the third and final game of the series, as well as the final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular season game. Despite allowing an early goal, the Yellowjackets scored four times to defeat the Buccaneers 4-2.
 
Game Notes
  • Julia Fussy scored in just 90 seconds to give Beloit a 1-0 lead.
  • Nearing the end of the period, the Yellowjacket duo of Avery Olenik (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) and Veda Roeske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) sent feeds to Kasja Kovala (Winona, Minn./Winona) who lit the lamp at 18:20 to level the scoring on the power play.
  • Another power play for the Yellowjackets came about, and this time Veda Roeske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) found the back of the net. She was assisted by Olenik and Addison Fee (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) at 10:52 in period two.
  • Kovala fired her second goal of the game at the 12-minute mark, receiving a pass from Ella Hornung (Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray) and sending it past Maddy Bliss.
  • Stacy Steiner (Janesville, Wis./Craig) garnered a goal just 70 seconds later, giving UWS a 4-1 lead.
  • Natasha Ludwig of BC scored shorthanded at 17:12, but the damage had already been done as the Yellowjackets emerged with a 4-2 win.
  • Both Hornung and Fee finished with a team-best seven shots.
  • Maddie Wostrel (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) picked up the win on Saturday, making 15 saves as the Yellowjacket netminder.
 
The Yellowjackets have advanced to the WIAC Tournament. They will take on the No. 1 seed Falcons of UW-River Falls, set for the weekend of Feb. 27-28. Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. inside Hunt Arena.
