Yellowjacket Women Sweep Twin Bill Versus Emerson, Wheaton

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Yellowjacket softball team's winning streak grew to four Wednesday, as they took on Emerson College and Wheaton College in a split doubleheader. Versus the Lions, they would secure a 5-2 victory before taking down the Thunder 6-2.

Game One Notes
  • The Lions struck first blood in the top of the third, but the Yellowjackets stung back in the bottom half with two runs. Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) tripled to right field to plate Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) before MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) hit an RBI single up the middle to lead 2-1.
  • It took three innings for the next run to come in, and it was Kari Sorensen from Emerson to level the scoring at 2-2 courtesy of an RBI single to right field.
  • A pair of walks to open the bottom half of the sixth led to a bases-clearing miscue from Emerson, ultimately giving Superior a 5-2 win.
  • Six different Yellowjackets finished with a hit, while Leccia and Karen Balabon (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) each logged a stolen base.
  • Bethany Lewis (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) logged her third win in the circle, pitching a flawless 1.2 innings.

Game Two Notes
  • Wheaton hit an RBI double to left field in their half of the first inning before Superior was able to tie things up with an RBI single to center field off the bat of Carly Stuckmayer (Delano, Minn./Delano).
  • The Thunder led 2-1 until the top of the fifth inning, where UWS saw Megan Witt (Burnsville, Minn./Eagan) hit an infield single to plate Balabon, who reached base off a leadoff bunt, to ultimately tie the game at 2-2.
  • The Yellowjackets took advantage of a pair of Wheaton miscues, scoring four runs and garnering one hit to take a 6-2 lead. Highlighting the inning was a two-RBI triple off the bat of Leccia.
  • The Thunder got one back in the bottom half of the seventh, but Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) would give way to Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) and she'd shut the door for a 6-3 victory.
  • Swartz would take the win after toeing the rubber for 4.1 innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four. Mitchell was credited with a save.
  • Both Leccia and Witt finished with two hits to pace offensively.

The Yellowjackets conclude their time in Melbourne with a pair of games Thursday, facing off against Baldwin Wallace and Wilmington. The opening pitch versus the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 9 a.m. CT.
