Softball Splits to Conclude Florida Trip

MELBOURNE, Fla. – On the final day of the Spring Coast Games for the Yellowjacket softball team, they came away with a split, falling to Baldwin Wallace 9-3 before walking off Wilmington College 4-3.

Game One Notes
  • The Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace scored in every inning, totaling 14 hits and nine runs.
  • After BW scored two in the first inning, Superior saw Sophia Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) bunt in Tessa Twedt (Brookings, S.D./Brookings), who doubled down the left field line to begin the inning.
  • Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) later singled to right field, plating Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) who singled up the middle to level the scoring.
  • UW-Superior's offense was neutralized until the top of the sixth where Maggie Gammell (Cottage Grove, Minn./East Ridge) plated MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) after her leadoff double to left field.
  • Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) threw the first four innings, taking the loss in the circle. Swartz and Georgia Youngblood (Ray, Mich./Lutheran North) threw the final two innings.
  • Bennett led UWS by going 2-4 with an RBI.

Game Two Notes
  • The Quakers struck first in the top of the second, but the Yellowjackets responded in the bottom half with an RBI single courtesy of Megan Witt (Burnsville, Minn./Eagan).
  • After Wilmington scored two more, a two RBI single from Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) leveled the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Both teams were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position until the bottom of the seventh. Bennett drew an infield single before she stole second. After advancing to third, Stuckmayer would single to the shortstop and score the winning run, ending the Yellowjackets' Florida Trip with a 4-3 victory.
  • Bennett finished the game against the Quakers a perfect 3-3, scoring two runs and drawing a walk.
  • Bethany Lewis (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) went the distance and secured the win for Superior, allowing just two earned runs while striking out four.

The Yellowjackets (10-6) finish their spring trip with a record of 7-3. They will return to action Tuesday, Mar. 24 where they face UW-Eau Claire in a doubleheader. The opening pitch is set for 3 p.m.
