WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – Friday evening the Yellowjacket baseball team took on Saint Mary's to begin a four-game series. The Cardinals took the opener, scoring three runs in the early innings and using that to defeat Superior 8-2.
Game Notes
- Saint Mary's brought in one in the first off a sacrifice fly, and in the third two more were driven in. In the fifth, Sam Knickerbocker drilled a two RBI single for SMU to lead 5-0.
- In the sixth inning, Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) hit a homer to left field to break the scoring and trail by four at 5-1.
- The 'Jackets plated another in the eighth as Wylee Lottman (Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover), who singled up the middle to open the inning.
- Three more runs came in for the Cardinals, and they would secure an 8-2 victory.
- Josh Pritchard (Surrey, British Columbia/Clayton Heights Secondary) got the start on the bump, taking the loss after throwing five innings. Miles Kay (Albertville, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville) relieved him for 2.1 innings before Reese Fleig (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) pitched the final 0.2 innings.
- Carter Thielke (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) led offensively, going 3-4 on the day.
The Yellowjackets and Cardinals continue their series Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at West Liberty High School.
