WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – The Yellowjacket baseball team fell twice to the Cardinals of Saint Mary's (Minn.) Saturday, dropping game one of a twin bill 5-0 and game two by a 7-2 decision.
Game One Notes
- A sacrifice fly scored the first Cardinal run in their half of the second inning, and later in the frame a single down the left field line plated the second run.
- The Yellowjackets threw five innings of shutout baseball until Reese Berg singled through the left side for Saint Mary's, plating a run before Drew Rothenberger clubbed a two RBI double down the left field line, scoring the fifth and final run of the game.
- Superior garnered four hits in the doubleheader opener.
- Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) drew the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings. His record drops to 1-2.
- Aiden Pfeifer (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) threw the final out of the game.
Game Two Notes
- Four runs were scored by Saint Mary's in the first inning, and they'd plate another in the third.
- Superior got on the board in their half of the sixth inning, beginning with an infield single from Isaac Johnson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo). Wylee Arro (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) would single up the middle before Paddy Kelly (Andover, Minn./Andover) singled through the left side to drive in one.
- Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Arro for their second run.
- The 'Jackets were threatening in the top of the eighth and had their heart of the order up in the ninth, but a two-run homer from Saint Mary's Ryan Csida shut the door at 7-2.
- Johnson led the 'Jackets going 2-3 with a run scored.
- Niles Monroe (Belleville, Wis./Belleville) suffered the loss after throwing 1.2 innings. He gave way to Gio Basile (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North) and Declan Higgins (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) who threw 3 and 3.1 innings, respectively.
The Yellowjackets and Cardinals will play the fourth and final game of the series Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
