MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Yellowjacket softball team split its first games of the Space Coast Spring Games, defeating Marietta 2-0 before falling to Concordia (Minn.) in the bottom of the seventh inning 4-3.
Game One Notes
- It took until the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Yellowjackets broke a scoreless tie with a double off the bat of Tessa Twedt (Brookings, S.D./Brookings), scoring Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) who logged a one-out triple.
- Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) later singled to centerfield, scoring Kylie Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) who drew a walk after the Twedt double.
- Abby Mitchcell got her third win of the season, pitching seven innings of shutout softball. She allowed just four hits while striking out four.
- Snyder led offensively as she went 2-3 with a run scored.
Game Two Notes
- Superior got on the board in the first, beginning with a leadoff double off the bat of Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg). After advancing to third, she came home after Snyder stole second.
- In the top of the fourth, Snyder led off the inning with a single. She would get driven in by a Swartz sacrifice fly to lead 2-0.
- The Cobbers would counter with a sacrifice fly of their own to cut the Yellowjackets' lead to one at 2-1.
- Bennett led off the fifth with a double and was later brought in off an infield bunt from Carly Stuckmayer (Delano, Minn./Delano), leading 3-1 heading into the late innings.
- Concordia scored two runs off three hits in their half of the sixth, tying the game at 3-3.
- The Cobbers hit a leadoff double off Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) and following a sacrifice bunt to send the runner to third, Alexa Krueger would score off a wild pitch.
- Bennett went 2-4 in game two, scoring two runs.
The 'Jackets face off against Shenandoah and Cornell Sunday, with first pitch times of 11:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. CT.
