MELBOURNE, Fla. – Sunday the Yellowjacket softball team took on the Hornets of Shenandoah University before facing the Rams of Cornell College. In game one Superior defeated the Hornets 3-1 before falling in extra innings to Cornell in game two.
Game One Notes
- Shenandoah clubbed a one-out homer in the top of the first inning and led until the bottom of the fourth, where Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) reached on an error before logging a pair of stolen bases. She later scored on a wild pitch before Kylie Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) singled to center field to score Carly Stuckmayer (Delano, Minn./Delano), who singled down the left field line.
- In the bottom half of the fifth, the Yellowjackets saw their lead increase to 3-1 after Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) hit a solo shot to left field.
- The Hornets hit a leadoff triple down the right field line in the top half of the seventh, but Superior drew a flyout and picked off the runner at third to end the game and gave the Jackets a 3-1 win.
- Both Bennett and Stuckmayer finished going 2-3 with a run scored.
- Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) went the distance and picked up her fourth win of the season, allowing seven hits and striking out two.
Game Two Notes
- Cornell scored in the third and sixth innings, but Superior responded with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Snyder walked, Tessa Twedt (Brookings, S.D./Brookings) doubled and Zwak drove in both with a double to left field, leveling the game at 2-2.
- In the bottom of the eighth inning, a trio of singles drove in the winning run for the Rams, giving them a 3-2 victory over Superior.
- Twedt led offensively going 3-4. Karen Balabon (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) followed going 2-5.
- Bethany Lewis (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) and Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) pitched 3.2 and 2.1 innings, respectively, before Mitchell came in the final 1.2 innings.
- UW-Superior clubbed 11 hits in game two of the day.
UWS continues with two more games Monday, taking on Saint Mary's (Ind.) and Rivier. Game one is set for 11:15 a.m. CT at the Space Coast Complex.
