SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjacket softball team began their second Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) series Friday, taking on the Knights from Martin Luther College. With winter weather still lingering in Superior, both teams would shift to a neutral site, playing their series at Reynolds Field on the campus of Northwestern.
Game one began with the Yellowjackets scoring a pair of runs in the first and third innings, but the Knights responded with three runs in the top of the sixth. Superior was able to hold on and claim a 6-3 victory behind their eight hits.
Game Notes
- Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) led off with a double to left center before MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) plated her. Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) followed with a single to right center, scoring Carly Stuckmayer (Delano, Minn./Delano) who reached on a fielding error to lead 2-0.
- Leccia caught the Knights off guard with a bunt single to plate Stuckmayer, who singled through the left side to begin the inning.
- Swartz would plate Leccia with a double to left center, giving Superior a 4-0 lead.
- In the top of the sixth inning, the knights hit back-to-back doubles to score a pair, and later saw Keightan Rank hit an RBI single to right center to trail by two at 5-3.
- The final blow came from Delaney Johnson (Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth), as she clubbed her first collegiate homer to center field, giving the Yellowjackets the ultimate 6-3 win.
- Swartz and Bennett led offensively, going 2-4 at the plate.
- Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) picked up her sixth win after 5.1 innings of work in the circle. Bethany Lewis (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) came in for the final 1.2 innings.
The Yellowjackets and Knights are back Saturday in doubleheader action. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Reynolds Field on the campus of Northwestern.
