Yellowjackets Sweep the Knights on Saturday

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjacket softball team completed a sweep of the Knights from Martin Luther Saturday, picking up a 7-4 win in game one of the doubleheader before exploding for a 24-4 win in five innings.

Game One Notes
  • The Knights struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but the 'Jackets responded with a pair, courtesy of a leadoff homer off the bat of Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg). Run number two came off a sacrifice fly to center field from Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo), scoring Carly Stuckmayer (Delano, Minn./Delano).
  • Four runs off one hit and a Knight error came in the bottom of the second, giving the Yellowjackets a 6-1 advantage.
  • MLC's Sarah Yonkovich scored on a wild pitch after hitting a double to left center, bringing the score to 6-2.
  • Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) singled through the left side to plate Maya Anderson (Cambridge, Minn./Totino-Grace), who pinch ran for Maggie Gammell (Cottage Grove, Minn./East Ridge) who drew a one-out walk.
  • The Knights scored two more in the top of the sixth making the score 7-4, but the Yellowjackets held on to win after inducing a quick seventh to secure the win.
  • Bennett led going 2-2 with a run scored, two RBIs, two walks and two stolen bases.
  • Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) got the win in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. Georgia Youngblood (Ray, Mich./Lutheran North) later came in, hurling the last three.

Game Two Notes
  • Martin Luther once again struck first, scoring one run in the top of the first.
  • In Superior's half of the first, a combination of base hits and walks provided a 14-run inning. MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) singled and advanced third off an error before Swartz doubled to right center.
  • Karen Balabon (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) ladter logged a bunt single, and after consecutive patient at-bats, Megan Witt (Burnsville, Minn./Eagan) plated Swartz with a triple down the right field line.
  • The final run of the first inning came from Hanna Hovland (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), who grounded out to short to plate Witt, leading 14-1.
  • Snyder hit a two RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the second, and later Hovland would single to bring the game to 18-2. Kiah Frydenlund (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie East) drew a bases-loaded walk for the fifth run of the inning, leading 19-3.
  • In the bottom of the third Georgia Youngblood (Ray, Mich./Lutheran North) drew her first collegiate hit, a one-out single through the left side. Later Taylor Everson (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) garnered an RBI single through the left side, plating the 20th run of the game.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hovland drew a walk before Delaney Johnson (Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth) doubled to right field. Frydenlund would follow that up with her first Yellowjacket home run to center field, leading 24-3.
  • The Knights scored one in the fifth, but Bethany Lewis (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) would shut the door and claim her fifth win of the season after a 24-4 win.
  • Snyder went 1-1 with three walks, three RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Both Frydenlund and Leccia led with four RBIs.
