Women’s Tennis Sweeps Morris, Downs Blugolds in Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Sunday the Yellowjacket women's tennis team came away with a pair of victories, sweeping the Cougars of Minnesota Morris 7-0 before coming away with a 4-3 victory over the host-Blugolds inside the John and Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center.
 
Match One Notes
  • The Yellowjacket tandems of Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) and Claudia Curtis (Hartland, Wis./Lake Mills), and Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) each came away with a 6-0 win over their Morris counterparts at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.
  • Tejada took down Kristen Muller 6-1, 6-0, while Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) also picked up straight set victories of 6-0, 6-1 versus Jhazlyn Wynne.
  • Jonas, slotted at the third singles slot, defeated Mariah Mireles 6-0, 6-1.
  • Amery Oberg (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) went the distance against her Cougar counterpart at No. 4 singles. Facing Katharine Kelm, she won 6-2 before dropping a narrow 7-6 (7-5) second. She would eventually claim the tiebreaker with a 1-0 (10-2) decision.
  • Lillian Kimber (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) claimed her singles bout, defeating Avery Davis 6-3 and 6-0.
 
Match Two Notes
  • Taking on UW-Eau Claire, Curtis and Tejada fell 6-4 at the top doubles slot.
  • Anouk Bluemm (Nuremberg, Germany/Wilhelm-Loege Gymnasium) and Jonas took down Delaney Hanson and Kiera Schmid 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Addison Fee (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) and Oezen picked up a 7-5 win for the doubles point.
  • Bluemm was positioned at the second singles spot, and she took down Beatriz Felchak 6-4, 6-2.
  • Curtis won at No. 4 singles, defeating her Blugold counterpart 6-3, 7-5.
  • Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) came away with the big win versus Morgan Briggman. After falling 6-2 in the opener, she rallied to a 6-2 win before snatching the tiebreaker 1-0 (10-8).
 
The Yellowjackets (15-7, 4-0 UMAC) are back in action Wednesday as they take on St. Scholastica. The opening serve is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Longview Tennis Club.
