Softball Claims Doubleheader Victory Versus Polars

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket softball team rounded out its six-game homestand Saturday, playing their final Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) games with Crown College. In game one, the 'Jackets scored a pair of runs early and poured it on from there, winning 9-0 in five innings. In game two of the twin bill, the Polars struck first in the first inning but the Yellowjackets responded in a big way offensively, claiming another victory in five innings by a 13-3 decision.

Game One Notes
  • The 'Jackets scored two runs in the first inning, highlighted by a triple off the bat of Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park). She played Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) who drew a leadoff walk to begin the game.
  • After singling up the middle and advancing all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Delaney Johnson (Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth), Karen Balabon (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) came around to score on a wild pitch to give Superior a 3-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the third, Snyder clobbered a pitch to left center for her seventh home run of the season before a throwing error and sacrifice fly gave Superior a 7-0 lead.
  • The Polars loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning with nobody out, but Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) produced a flyout and a pair of strikeouts to get out of the jam.
  • Hanna Hovland (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) hit an infield single and ultimately came around to score before an RBI single from MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) brought home the ninth and final run of the game, giving Superior a 9-0 win.
  • Snyder went 3-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, coming just a single shy of completing the cycle.
  • Mitchell picked up the win, moving her record to 11-8.

Game Two Notes
  • Bennett led off the bottom of the first with a triple that deflected off the first baseman's glove and was brought in off an RBI double to left center field from Snyder.
  • Leccia reached on a Polar miscue, plating Snyder for the 2-1 lead.
  • A three-run blast off the bat of Johnson drove in three more in the Yellowjacket first to lead 5-1.
  • Crown responded in the top of the second inning, scoring a pair to trim their deficit down to two at 5-3.
  • Leccia drove in Snyder on a double to left field, answering back to regain a three-run lead at 6-3 in the bottom of the second inning.
  • UWS took control with a seven-run fourth, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Kylie Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) to left center field. Georgia Youngblood (Ray, Mich./Lutheran North) would log a pinch-hit single to right center before Maggie Gammell (Cottage Grove, Minn./East Ridge) followed suit with a single through the right side.
  • Youngblood came into pitch for the final inning and secured the 13-3 win.
  • Snyder and Leccia went 2-3 to lead Superior's offensive output.
  • Bethany Lewis (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) won her seventh game in the circle, pitching four innings.

The Yellowjackets are in action Wednesday where they take on St. Scholastica. Action is set at 3:30 p.m. in Duluth.
