WINONA, Minn. – Friday evening saw the Yellowjacket volleyball team commence its season, taking on Wisconsin Lutheran in the Sugar Loaf Classic, hosted by Saint Mary's (Minn.). In the season opener, the Yellowjackets handled the Warriors in three sets, which solidifies the first win for first-year head coach

Match Notes
- Superior began the first set with five consecutive points, with kills from Kyndra Peterson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) and Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity). Despite the Warriors coming within three at 8-5, the duo of Peterson and Melissa Hoff (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) garnered kills throughout the opening frame.
- Aspen Gentele (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) and Liv Kriewaldt (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) carded their first kills as a Yellowjacket, and the 'Jackets held on the rest of the way for a 25-15 win in set one.
- Both squads traded points early in the second, which included a three-point lead from WLC. Six-straight points followed, and later a pair of kills from Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) guided Superior to a 25-17 victory in set two.
- The final set saw the 'Jackets lead by as many as 10 points early on. Hohbein logged back-to-back kills before Carlie Lohman (South Range, Wis./Superior) logged a service ace, and later Gentele, Peterson and Hohbein provided additional offensive support.
- UWS took advantage of Warriors miscues, establishing a 14-point lead and coming away with a 25-10 win.
- Hohbein and Peterson led with nine kills apiece, while Gentele logged eight.
- Defensively, Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior) led with 19 digs while Hohbein and Lohman followed with 12 and 11, respectively.
The Yellowjackets take on day two at the Sugar Loaf Classic Saturday, taking on tournament-host Saint Mary's and Luther. Their match against the Cardinals is set for 11 a.m.
