St. Scholastica spikes Yellowjackets

Salann Gilbert

St. Scholastcia 3, Yellowjackets 0

Wednesdays appear to not be the best day for the Yellowjackets to play volleyball.  Last week, they fell in straight sets in an error-filled contest against UW-Stout at home.  After rebounding with a solid weekend in their tournament at La Crosse, it was more of the same on Wednesday at St. Scholastica.  The Yellowjackets had little life.  Combine that with the fact that St. Scholastica did little wrong for much of the match and you have a recipe for defeat, as the Yellowjackets fell 3-0.

The Yellowjackets were attacking at under ten percent for much of the match, until a run late in the third set put them above .100.  They finished with a team attack percentage of .112.  St. Scholastica, meanwhile, had a team attack percentage of .440.

In the first set, the Saints put the Yellowjackets away early, thanks to the serving of Anna Zyvoloski.  With the score just 3-1, Zyvoloski led the Saints on a run that stretched the lead to 11-1.  The Yellowjackets were never able to string points together, or recover.  The teams essentially traded points the rest of the way before the Saints closed it out by a 25-11 score.

The second set proved to be more of the same.  The Saints, again fueled by Zyvoloski's serving, jumped out fast to a 5-0 lead.  From there, the teams again traded points, but it was the Saints gaining two to every one for the Yellowjackets.  The Saints would have a 4-0 run late in the set and cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-10 win in the second set.

The Yellowjackets took their first lead of the match early in the third set.  With Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) serving, they jumped to a 3-1 lead.  But after regaining possession, the Saints again went on a run, and again did it while Zyvoloski was serving, racking up eight straight points to lead 11-3.  The Saints would stretch the lead to 19-11 before the Yellowjackets would finally go on a sustained run.  After a Zyvoloski service error, Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) (Stillwater, Minn.) took the ball and served the Yellowjackets to within a point at 19-18.  The teams again traded points, but the Saints took three of the final four points, closing out the match with a third set win of 25-21.

Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) (Solon Springs, Wis.) led the Yellowjackets with eight kills and a .350 attack percentage.  Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn.) was next with five kills.  Deadrick led the team with 19 assists.  On defense Tynen and Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) had eight digs apiece.  The Yellowjackets had zero blocks in the match.

The Saints employed a two-pronged offensive attack, with Zyvoloski and Paige Hardy each coming away with 16 kills.  Zyvoloski had three of the Saints' seven service aces.  Sarah Kurtovich had 35 assists.  Zyvoloski also led the Saints in digs with 14.  Defensively the Saints had 45 digs and four blocks.

The Yellowjackets (15-16, 1-5 WIAC) will close out the 2011 regular season with a pair of conference matches at home on the weekend.  They will host UW-Platteville on October 28 at 7:00 p.m. and UW-La Crosse at 12:00 p.m. on October 29 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
