Yellowjackets split again, place 4th at Oshkosh

The second day of the Pizza Hut Classic in Oshkosh, Wis. saw the Yellowjackets bounce back from their first defeat of the season with another five set victory, before falling in the third-place game to St. Norbert College.

Yellowjackets 3, Lawrence 2

As was the case for the Yellowjackets on Friday, the first match of the day posed a test.  And for the second straight day, they needed five sets to pull off the win.  The Yellowjackets took the first two sets by 25-20 and 25-21 scores.  Lawrence University would bounce back and take the next two sets, 22-25 and 12-15 to set up the fifth and deciding set.  The Yellowjackets and Vikings traded punches in the fifth set, going into extra time before the Yellowjackets finally prevailed 19-17.

Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) (Stillwater, Minn.) led the offensive charge with 13 kills, followed closely by Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) (Mankato, Minn.) who had ten.  Gosson's .280 attack percentage also led the team, who hit .096 collectively.  Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) continued her strong play as a freshman, leading the Yellowjackets with 25 set assists. 

Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) had 23 digs in the match, followed by Deadrick with 16.  Tynen and Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) (Grantsburg, Wis.) had 11 digs apiece.  The Yellowjackets had four blocks in the match.

St. Norbert 3, Yellowjackets 1

After using everything they had to win the first match of the day, the Yellowjackets had little time to rest prior to their match against St. Norbert College, who lost its first match of the day to host UW-Oshkosh.  The Green Knights took the first set, and the Yellowjackets took the second to even the match.  St. Norbert, however, would take over and cruise through the final two sets, defeating the Yellowjackets by scores of 21-25, 25-16, 25-5 and 25-17.  The victory gave St. Norbert third place in the tournament.

Tynen and Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn.) had seven kills apiece to lead the Yellowjackets.  Cole had 15 assists in the match to the lead the Yellowjackets.  Wirtz once again led the Yellowjackets in digs, grabbing 20.  Deadrick, Cole and Sami Cross (Granite Falls, Minn./Granite Falls) (Granite Falls, Wis.) had eight apiece.

The Yellowjackets, currently 6-2, are in the midst of one of the best starts to a volleyball season in school history.  The last time the Yellowjackets started 6-2 was 1995.

All-Tournament Team: For the second consecutive week, freshman setter Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) was named to the all-tournament team.  Last week at Alverno, Deadrick was named the tournament's MVP in addition to earning a spot on the all-tournament team.

The Yellowjackets (6-2, 0-0 WIAC) will have a busy weekend coming up, taking part in Macalester Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. before opening the home portion of their schedule.  On Friday, September 16, they will take on Buena Vista University and host Macalester College.  The next day, they will close out the tournament with matches against Grinnell College and Carleton College.  On Sunday, September 18, the Yellowjackets will play Lakehead University of Thunder Bay, Ontario at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.  The home opener will get underway at 2:00 p.m.
