Whitewater 3, Yellowjackets 0
The Yellowjacket volleyball team opened the WIAC portion of its 2011 schedule on the road, traveling to UW-Whitewater, and the Warhawks were anything but gracious hosts. The Yellowjackets put up a fight, but in the end, the 21st-ranked Warhawks were just too much for the young spikers from Superior. The Yellowjackets were shutout for just the second time this season, falling in three sets 19-25, 24-26 and 15-25.
Sophomore Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) (Stillwater, Minn.) had a big game on both sides for the Yellowjackets, leading the team in kills with seven and coming in second with 13 digs. Tynen's .235 attack percentage was also tops among all Yellowjackets. Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) (Mankato, Minn.) was next with six kills. The Yellowjackets had an attack percentage of .090 in the match. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) had all 20 set assists for the Yellowjackets.
On defense, junior Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) led the way with 14 digs, followed by Tynen and then Deadrick with 10. Rachel Langer (Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth) (Ellsworth, Wis.) had two blocks for the Yellowjackets, one solo and one assist.
The Yellowjackets (8-5, 0-1 WIAC) continue their road swing and will play another WIAC match on Saturday, September 24, when they are at UW-Stevens Point. The match will get underway at noon.
