Yellowjackets 2, Platteville 1
The Yellowjackets picked up their first conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon, rallying from behind and winning 2-1 over the Pioneers at UW-Platteville on a late penalty kick goal by Logan George (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn.).
It was the Yellowjackets' first win over UW-Platteville since men's soccer became a WIAC sponsored sport in 2009.
The Pioneers got on the board first, in the 19th minute, when Anthony Heller snuck out of a scramble in front of the box and scored his second of the year to make it 1-0. From there, it was all Yellowjackets, pressing on defense and taking advantage of their chances. Early in the second half, they tied the contest at 1-1 when Eric Nilsen (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) (Duluth, Minn.) scored his third goal of the season on an assist from Alex Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) (Woodbury, Minn.) in the 65th minute.
Then with 6:17 to play in regulation, the Yellowjackets got their first lead of the day. Nilsen drove hard toward the Platteville goal, taking on a pair of Pioneers and drawing the foul. In the process the ball came to George and he was awarded a penalty kick. George made no mistake, kicking left while the goalkeeper went the other way, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 edge.
TheShots in the game were 9-9, with the Yellowjackets holding a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) (New Hope, Minn.) made one save to pick up the win, improving to 4-1 on the season. Jared Kuehl made two saves in the losing effort for Platteville.
The Yellowjackets (6-2, 1-1 WIAC) return home to play Finlandia University in a conference match-up on Wednesday, September 28 at the Superior High School Soccer Complex. Game time is 4:00 p.m. It is the second game of a college soccer doubleheader and is also "Caps for Cancer" day.
The Yellowjackets ask that fans come to the game with new winter hats for men, women and childeren that will be donated to the Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center, which is funded by the Miller-Dwan Foundation and is located in the Essentia Health Cancer Center. Hats will then be given, as needed to people in the Twin Ports, Ashland and surrounding areas that have lost their hair due to cancer treatment.
