The last few weeks have been a difficult for the UW-Superior women's basketball team.   Not only had the Yellowjackets lost five straight heading into Wednesday night's road game with UW-Stout, a key injury to guard Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) left the team short-handed for their contest with the Blue Devils.

Add it all up and the difficulties proved to be too much for the Yellowjackets as UW-Stout rallied from the four-point halftime deficit to edge UW-Superior 60-56 at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie.

The Yellowjackets (9-11 overall, 3-9 WIAC) fell behind 6-2 in the early going before consecutive jumpers by Carly Chell (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) and Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) gave UW-Superior an 8-7 lead with 14:36 left in the opening half.

A three-pointer by Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) upped the Yellowjackets' lead to 11-9 with 13:44 left before a 14-5 Blue Devils' spurt gave UW-Stout a 23-16 edge on a three by Katelynne Folkers with 7:35 remaining on the clock.

UW-Superior went on an 11-0 run in the final seven minutes of the half however to take a 27-23 edge into the intermission.

Davis started and ended the the run with a pair baskets before Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) added five points and Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) chipped in with a jumper as well.

The Blue Devils (5-15, 1-10) refused to back down after halftime, evening matters at 31-31 on two free throws by Alyse Kaml with 15:07 remaining before Haley Froehlich's three-pointer with 14:52 left gave UW-Stout a 36-33 edge.

UW-Stout upped their lead to 41-33 a few moments later as Bethany Reyzer connected on two free throws with 12:22 remaining before the Yellowjackets made a late run behind six points from Mariah Marcol (Dollar Bay, Mich./Dollar Bay) to eventually even matters at 56-56 with 1:18 left in regulation.

But the Blue Devils got a layup from Whitney Rawdon with exactly 1:00 left to take a 58-56 lead before Rawdon connected on two free throw in the last 18 seconds to seal the victory for UW-Stout.

The Yellowjackets were paced by Urmanski with 13 points while Davis finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) pitched in with eight points and a team-leading 12 rebounds for UW-Superior, which held a 42-37 edge in rebounding for the game.

UW-Stout was led by Reyzer with 13 points while Kayla Windt added 11 points for the Blue Devils.

Milestone Update: Hart jumped up a spot on both the scoring and rebounding charts.  With eight points, she now has 985 for her career which puts her seventh all-time.  Next up is Stephanie Janigo in sixth with 1,001 points.  Her 12 rebounds helped her jump into sixth all-time with 587.  She is 38 boards away from passing Dawn Bartuska and breaking into the top five.  Davis now has 869 points and is 13 away from passing Lindsey Anderson and moving into 12th position.  Her 11 rebounds gives her 492 for her career, just four away from tying Pam Papenfuss for tenth all-time.  Urmanski jumped into the top-15 in all-time scoring and is two points shy of 800 for her career.

The Yellowjackets return home to host UW-Oshkosh Saturday, February 4.  Opening tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
