The last month has been a difficult one for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team.  Since setting the school record for consecutive wins, they have struggled to pick up victories, limping their way to a 1-7 record dating back to January 7.  Suffice it to say, as the season winds down a win would be a good thing, and one that didn't come with the greatest degree of difficulty would be preferred.

Mission accomplished.

On Tuesday, the Yellowjackets scored the first 12 points of the game against Crown College and won in a laugher, 86-35 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

With the victory, the Yellowjackets (11-14, 4-11 WIAC) got back in the win column and closed out the non-conference portion of the 2011-12 schedule, all the while going deep into their bench and giving valuable minutes to players lower on the depth chart.

Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) got things started, scoring the first six points in 1:40 and the Yellowjackets were off and running.  A three-pointer by the Storm's Judy Mundt stopped the bleeding, making it 12-3 just 4:14 in, but it was already too little, too late, as the Yellowjackets continued to pour it on.

By the time the game reached the 11-minute mark, the Yellowjackets had opened up a 33-12 lead and the starters were just about finished.  From there the reserves took center stage, led by Hillary Peterson (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake) who scored nine points off the bench in the opening half.  The Yellowjackets shot 54.3% from the field in the opening 20 minutes and led 47-24 at the break.  Davis led the Yellowjackets overall with ten points in the first half.

In the second half the Yellowjackets only got better, shooting 55.2%, and increasing their lead.  They kept the Storm off the board for almost the first five minutes, increasing their lead to 36 at 60-24.  The domination continued and the lead reached 50 points with 5:57 to play following a pair of free throws by Vanessa Lebens (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area).  A Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) layup with 2:27 to play made the lead a game-high 51 points and closed out the scoring at the same time.

The Storm scored just 11 points and shot a mere 9.1% from the field in the second half.

Peterson led the Yellowjackets with 13 points, followed by Davis with 12.  Adams and Mariah Marcol (Dollar Bay, Mich./Dollar Bay) had ten points apiece as four Yellowjackets scored in double figures and 12 scored at least one point.  Lebens and Marcol had eight rebounds apiece to lead the Yellowjackets, who outrebounded the Storm 62-23.

Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) had a team-best six assists and six different players had a blocked shot.  McDonald also contributed on defense with a team-high three steals.

Mundt led Crown with 12 points.

It was nearly an historic night defensively for the Yellowjackets, who came within nine points of the school record for fewest points allowed in a game.  The record is 26 points, set most recently against UW-Stout on February 11, 1977.  The 35 points allowed was the fewest surrendered by a Yellowjacket team since Suomi College (now Finlandia University) scored just 34 points on November 20, 1999.

Milestone Update: Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) scored nine points giving her 1,033 in her career, sixth all-time.  She has 621 rebounds and needs four more to move into fifth place.  Hart also moved into the top-ten all-time in games played with 91.  Davis now has 912 points and needs 22 to move into 11th on the all-time list.  She has 515 rebounds, which is tenth all-time.  She also moved into a tie for sixth on the all-time games played list with 93.  Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) is 14th with 831 points and moved into seventh on the all-time assist list with 185.  Three more assists and she will move into sixth place on the list.

The Yellowjackets will continue their quest for the WIAC post-season and close out the 2011-12 regular season when they host UW-La Crosse on Saturday, February 18.  The tip-off is 3:00 p.m.
