Box Score

CLERMONT, FLA.,--The Yellowjackets were able to produce more offensively in game two on Friday, but it wasn't enough as they lost 14-9 to Keene State College in a scoring fest.

The first inning once again was not good to the Yellowjackets, as their early struggles carried over from the first game of the day.  Haley Chandler reached on base by an error by Elle Niemala right off the bat.  Katie Bradford was next and she hit a hard triple to right field that scored Chandler to put the Owls up 1-0.

Keene State continued to cruise when Sara Stocklinski hit an infield single, stole second and went to third when a throw by Chelsey Jarzin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) was mishandled by Niemala.  The error scored Bradford from third base to put the Owls up 2-0.  Keene State made the score 3-0 to close out the first inning when Nicole Dupuis hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Stocklinski from third.

In the second inning the Owls continued their offensive attack on the Yellowjackets.  Stocklinski hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Katie Newell, making the score 4-0.  Another run came across to make it 5-0 when Chandler scored on a wild pitch by Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School)

The Yellowjackets answered in the bottom half of the second inning when Kayla Blom (Alborn, Minn./Albrook High School) and Sarah Stansfield (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown High School) started the inning with back-to-back singles.  This set up an RBI single by Ashlee Olson (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) that scored Blom to make the score 5-1.

Keene State continued their run-scoring tear in the third inning when Maura Bergan doubled off the left field fence, scoring Jessica Fiorenza.  Newell later drove in Bergan to make the score 7-1 Owls through two-and-a-half innings.

The Yellowjackets, however put together their best performance offensively in the third inning when Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) led things off with a screaming single up the middle.  Garay was next up to bat and she singled up the middle.  With two runners on Niemala came to the plate and she smacked an RBI single that scored Brugman to make the score 7-2.

Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) later produced her first two RBI's in a Yellowjacket uniform, scoring Garay and Niemela on a single to center field to close the gap to 7-4.  Haider would later score on an error making it 7-5 through the third inning.

Keene State added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning when Bradford scored on a triple by Chandler.  Chandler would come around to score herself on a hard-hit double by Dupuis.  The score was 9-5 Owls at that point.

In the sixth inning, a pair of Owl hits, coupled with a pair of Yellowjacket errors produced four runs, opening the game up.  With two outs in the inning, Laura Chandler reached on an error and went to second on a wild pitch.  Chandler later advanced to third and scored when Samantha Nitso reached on an error.  Fiorenzo singled and Sara Bracken walked to load the bases.  Bergan then came up and cleared the bags with a three-run double to center field and it was 13-5.

The Yellowjackets' bats came alive in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Haider hit an infield single.  Jarzin followed that up with a single, but Haider was thrown out at third on the play, putting one on base with one out.  Taylor VanDamme (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) and Brugman would produce an RBI single each with two outs to close out the inning with the Yellowjackets trailing 13-7.

The Owls scored a single run in the top of the seventh inning, and the Yellowjackets answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Blom continued her hot streak with another single up the middle.  This set up another RBI single by Haider to make the score 14-8.  The Yellowjackets closed out the game's scoring when Olson hit a pop fly to left field that was dropped, this scored Haider to make the score 14-9.

Garay got the start for the Yellowjackets and she surrendered 14 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits, while walking one batter.  Every Yellowjacket in the starting line-up at least had one hit in the game.  The Yellowjackets were led at the plate by Brugman and Haider, each contributing three hits.  Garay and Blom followed that up with two hits apiece.

The Yellowjackets (0-2, 0-0 WIAC) will take on Washington and Jefferson College of Washington, Pa. tomorrow (Mar.17) at 9:00 a.m. EDT and Trinity College at 11:00 a.m. in Clermont, Fla.
