Winning streak hits three with sweep of Calvin

The Yellowjacket baseball team stretched its winning streak to three games when they completed a sweep of Calvin College on Monday, Mar. 19.  The Yellowjackets took game one by a 9-1 score.  Game two was interrupted in the first inning by lightning and hail, but resumed at a later hour.

Upon resuming the game the offense picked up where it left off and the Yellowjackets routed Knights 14-4.

The Yellowjackets are not having any difficulty scoring runs in the early going, having put up 54 runs in their last five games.

Evanson# followed with a walk to load the bases.  Following a strikeout Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) singled, bringing home two runs to open the scoring.  Next Shaun Marshall (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) came to the plate and singled, scoring two more and it was 4-0 Yellowjackets.

In the second the lead went to 5-0 when Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) walked and went to third on Soderquist's second single of the game.  Miller brought the run home when he hit into a fielder's choice.

Calvin got on the board in the top half of the fourth inning when Ben Cok drove a 2-1 pitch out of the park for a solo home run to make it 5-1.

In the bottom of the fifth the Yellowjackets got that run back when a single by Joe Ahrens (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) scored Fairbanks, who'd reached on an error, and it was 6-1.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out the Yellowjackets loaded the bases on walks to Soderquist and Evanson, sandiwched around Miller reaching on an error.  Robbie Veith (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) singled, scoring a pair to make it 8-1.  Evanson came across to score the game's final run on a Fairbanks sacrifice fly, making he final 9-1.

Box Score

The delay between the two games helped the Knights get their offense a litte bit more on track, but it also did the same for the Yellowjackets, who pounded out 16 hits in getting the sweep.

The Knights got the first run of the game when Jake Van Alten scored in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0.  Van Alten reached on an error and later came across on a ground out.

In the top of the second the Yellowjackets erupted, stringing together five consecutive hits that produced five runs, blowing the game wide open.  With one out Veith, Fairbanks, Marshall and Justin Haag (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) hit four singles in a row, bringing two runs home and giving the Yellowjackets the lead.  Casey Dittel (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) then tripled, scoring two more runs and suddenly it was 4-1.  Remund came up next, and his sacrifice fly plated Dittel and it was 5-1 Yellowjackets after two innings.

With one out in the top of the third, Evanson doubled and came around to score on Veith's double.  Following a singley by Fairbanks, Marhsall brought Veith home on a sacrifice fly and the lead bulged to 7-1.

The Yellowjacket offense kept the hammer down in the top of the fourth with another one-out rally.  Remund walked and went to third when Soderquist followed with a single.  Soderquist stole second, putting two runners in scoring position.  Miller then picked up his first hit with a single and also got an RBI as Remund scored making it 8-1.  Evanson doubled, bringing home another run and it was now 9-1.

Calvin had its biggest inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth as Yellowjacket starter Dan Genrich (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) got into trouble.  After getting the first out, Ben Wohl reached on an error, Austin Evanhouse walked and Van Alter reached on an error that brought a run home.  Tyler Tos drew a walk to load the bases, spelling the end of the day for Genrich.  Bobby Tyndall (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) replaced him and got out of the inning, but not before two runs scored and the Knights closed the gap to 9-4.

The Yellowjackets wasted little time getting those runs back, however.  In the top of the fifth Marshall walked and went ot second on a wild pitch.  Dittel reached after being hit by a pitch and Remund walked to load the bases.  Soderquist singled, scoring Marshall to put the Yellowjackets in double digits.  Miller spanked another single, scoring two more runs, making it 12-4.

In the top of the sixth Veith led off with a walk and later scored on a Marshall single.  The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring in the seventh.  With two outs, Weston Smith (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) was hit by a pitch and he immediately came around to score on an Evanson double, making the final score 14-4.

Genrich pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits to get the win.  He walked four and struck out four.  Tyndall pitched 1/2/3 innings and picked up two strikeouts.  Andrew Lange (Swanville, Minn./Little Falls) finished things off for the Yellowjackets with two scoreless innings.  He scattered a pair of hits and didn't have any walks or strikeouts.

Every Yellowjacket starter reached base at least once in the game, with eight of nine picking up at least one hit.  Evanson and Veith led the charge with three hits each, while Soderquist, Miller, Fairbanks and Marshall all had two hits.  Veith also scored three times.
