Box Score

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The Yellowjackets opened the WIAC portion of their schedule in Platteville taking on the Pioneers.  The Yellowjackets weren't able to adjust to the 42 degree temperatures compared to hot and sunny Clermont, Fla. and they dropped game one 4-1.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first when Ellyn Goerdt hit a bloop single to right field, and later advanced to second on an error by Yellowjacket right fielder Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato).  Goerdt would advance to third base on a wild pitch by Amanda LeBard (Superior, Wis./), who was intentionally walking Colleen Lowe, to put the runners on the corners.  Jordan Johnson was up to bat next and she hit a pop up that was dropped by Kayla Blom (Alborn, Minn./Albrook High School), scoring Goerdt to put the Pioneers up 1-0.

The Yellowjackets answered in the top of the third inning when Chelsey Jarzin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) walked.  Elle Niemala followed with an infield single to put two runners on.  Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) would bring home Jarzin on a laser double to center field to tie the game up 1-1.

The Pioneers took the lead for good in the fourth inning.  Natalie Schattner got things started with a single to left field.  Goerdt followed with another single and Chantal McReynolds moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt.  LeBard intentionally walked Lowe to load the bases.  This made way for Johnson, who hit an infield fly for the second out.  When Blom dropped the pop-up, Schattner scored from third to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.  Molly Rice drove in the last two runs of the game for UW-Platteville with a single up the middle, scoring Goerdt and Lowe to make the score 4-1 Pioneers.

LeBard got the start on the rubber for the Yellowjackets, pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out four.  Garay pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit.  Eight different Yellowjackets had a hit in the game.

Box Score

In the second game of the doubleheader, a nine-run fifth inning gave Platteville and insurmountable lead and they cruised to the Saturday sweep with a 17-5 victory.

The Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Taylor VanDamme (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) led off with an infield single and stole second base.  Jarzin followed that up with another infield single to put runners on the corners.  Niemala drove in VanDamme on a ground out to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.  Garay would drive in Jarzin on a groundball single to left field to make the score 2-0.

The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the first inning when Ashlen Folkers was hit by a pitch.  She came home when Schattner hit a two-run home run to tie the game 2-2.

Platteville built on that in the second inning when Goerdt hit a sharp single to center field.  Lowe was up to bat next and she drew a walk to put two runners on.  Johnson would bring home Goerdt when she doubled off the top of the left field fence to make the score 3-2 Pioneers.  Jeni Freiburger was hit by a pitch to load the bases for McReynolds, who singled up the middle, scoring Johnson and Lowe to widen the Pioneer lead to 5-2.

The Pioneers added another run when Folkers hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Freiburger and it was 6-2.  Platteville closed out the scoring in the inning when Schattner hit her second two-run home run of the game to widen the lead to 8-2.

The Yellowjackets closed the gap slightly with a run in the third inning when Garay and Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) produced back-to-back singles.  Ashlee Olson (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) followed that up with a walk to load the bases.  This set up an RBI for Kayla Anderson (Clayton, Wis./Clayton High School), who walked home Garay to narrow the Platteville lead to 8-3.

The Yellowjackets added two more runs in the fourth inning when VanDamme led off with a triple down the left field line.  Jarzin and Garay followed with walks to load the bases, and Brugman doubled to score a pair and make things interesting, trimming the deficit to 8-5.

And then the big inning came for the Pioneers.

Kayla Gosdeck bunted for a single, then advanced to second on a throwing error by Haider.  McReynolds hit a double, scoring Godseck to push the Pioneer lead to 9-5.  Folkers was hit by a pitch to put two runners on.  Schattner then drove in McReynolds to make the score 10-5.  Goerdt continued her strong day with a double to right center field, scoring Johnson push the score to 11-5.  Lowe walked on a wild pitch that scored Schattner from third base to give the Pioneers a comfortable 12-5 lead.

The offense kept coming.  Johnson hit a sharp groundball to second base that was mishandled by Niemala, plating Goerdt to make it 13-5.  Platteville went to its bench and more players got into the act.  Brittany Caley singled up the middle, scoring Lowe to make the score 14-5.  Johnson later scored on a wild pitch to make things 15-5.  The Pioneers closed out the scoring for the game when Folkers and Schattner poked back-to-back RBI singles to make the final 17-5.

LeBard pitched the first 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one.  Garay pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing ten runs on ten hits while walking none and striking out one.

Garay, Brugman, and VanDamme led the Yellowjackets at the plate with two hits each.

The Yellowjackets (6-10, 0-2 WIAC) will return to action next Friday (Apr. 6) when they will travel to UW-La Crosse for a WIAC doubleheader.  First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
