Yellowjackets, Macalester split again

Robbie Veith

For the second time in less than a week, the Yellowjacket baseball team found themselves on the Field Turf of Mall of America Field in Minneapolis, Minn., continuing their early schedule in the warm, snow-free confines of the Dome. For the second time in less than a week, their opponent in the doubleheader was Macalester College.  And for the second time in less than a week, the teams split said doubleheader.

The Scots, propelled by a two-run rally in the top of the seventh inning took game while, while the Yellowjackets used a late-inning rally of their own to take the rematch.

Game 1
Macalester 10, Yellowjackets 9
Box Score

Senior Nick Bursik (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater) took the mound in the fifth inning and cruised through the fifth and the sixth, allowing just one hit.  In the top of the seventh, however, the Scots scored a pair to take the lead.  Trailing 9-8, Jimmy Belfont singled to right-center field and advanced to second on a balk.  A pinch runner replaced Belfont and came around to score on a pinch-hit single by Nick Mar to tie the game.  Ross Bronfenbrenner then came to the plate as a pinch hitter and doubled, putting runners on second and third with one out.  Mar would score the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly from Graham Brown to make it 10-9.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Yellowjackets got a lead-off double from Casey Dittel (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury), but they were unable to advance him beyond second base.

The Yellowjackets put runs on the board in each of the first three innings.  A single run in the first scored when Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) led off with a triple and came across on an RBI-groundout by Wyatt Soderquist (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) to make it 1-0.

Macalester took the lead in the top of the second with a pair of runs, but the Yellowjackets answered with two of their own.  Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) led off with a double and advanced to third on a single from Mike Doescher (Wausau, Wis./).  Doescher went to second on the throw.  Both runners scored two batters later on a single by Robbie Veith (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd).

The Scots regained the lead with a six-run third inning, leading 8-3 when the Yellowjackets came to bat for the third time.  Again, however, the Yellowjackets rallied.  Soderquist led off the inning with a single and scored on #T.J. Evanson#'s second home run of the season and suddenly it was 8-5 with nobody out.  Later, Jeff Miller (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) singled and, with two outs, scored on the first home run of the year from Doescher.  Before the inning was out the Yellowjackets would add another run and the score was tied 8-8.

The Yellowjackets were able to break the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth when Joe Ahrens (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) singled with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Veith's RBI single to make it a 9-8 game.

Veith had a big first game at the plate, going 3-4 and driving in four runs.  Doescher was 2-4, scored twice and drove in two runs.  Ahrens and Soderquist also had multiple-hit games for the Yellowjackets, who had 14 hits in the ga
me.

Dan Genrich (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) got the start for the Yellowjackets and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks in just two innings.  He was relieved by Alex Beers (Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) who didn't fare much better, giving up three runs (two earned) on one hit and three walks without recording an out.  He gave way to Bobby Tyndall (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) who threw two scoreless innings.  Bursik relieved Tyndall and was tagged with the loss, dropping his record to 0-2 on the year.

Belfont led the way at the plate for the Scots, going 3-4 with two RBI.  Nick Meerson threw two scoreless innings to get the win.

Game 2
Yellowjackets 8, Macalester 0
Box Score

The score of game one indicates that the game was tight.  Seeing the score of game two, one would think it was an out-of-control contest, but in reality it was anything but that.  Scoreless through the first seven innings, the Yellowjackets exploded as the game moved into extra innings to get the win.

Through the first seven innings, the Yellowjackets had single hits in every inning except the fifth and the seventh.  Macalester countered with at least one hit in every inning but the third.  Each team put a runner in scoring position multiple times in the game, but couldn't push a run across.

With one out in the top of the eighth, Miller singled and went to second on a passed ball.  Doescher walked and was replaced on the basepaths by Peter Suska (Sobieski, Minn./Little Falls).  Both runners moved up a base when Ahrens reached base on an error.  The scoring started when Veith was hit by a pitch to bring a run home, making it 1-0.

Dittel came up next and blew the game open, clearing the bases with a triple to right field and suddenly it was a 4-0 game.  After Remund walked, Soderquist tripled to score two more and it was 6-0.  After a walk to Evanson, Soderquist scored on a wild pitch.  Evanson moved to second when Miller was walked and scored after a pair of wild pitches, making it 8-0.  All eight runs scored with two outs in the inning.

Ethan Branum (Nisswa, Minn./Brainerd) pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out one to seal the win for the Yellowjackets.

Mike Swanson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) got the start and pitched seven strong innings for the Yellowjackets, scattering eight hits and striking out two without allowing a walk in picking up his first win of the season.

Miller went 3-4 with a walk in the game and scored a run.  Dittel was 2-4 with a run scored and three RBI.  The Yellowjackets had nine hits in the game.

Nick Mar and Mitch Glasser each went 2-3 in the game for Macalester.

The Yellowjackets (2-2, 0-0 WIAC) will play two more games at Mall of America Field before leaving on their spring trip to Arizona.  On Wednesday, March 14 they will play two against Augsburg College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
