Box Score

RIVER FALLS, Wis.—The Yellowjacket softball team had a tough day of WIAC play on Saturday, dropping a pair of games on the road at UW-RIver Falls, who currently sit fourth in the conference.  In game one the Falcons blanked the Yellowjackets 10-0, due in large part to an offensive attacked paced by three home runs.

The Falcons came out flying in the first inning when Nicole Lubahn bunted for a single.  She later stole second base and was driven home on a Patty Olson single to make it 1-0.  With Kristy Martinson (Olson's pinch runner) on first base, Ashley Goettl hit a monster two-run home run over the right-center field fence to push the River Falls lead to 3-0.  Amanda Ryder rounded out the Falcon scoring in the inning when she hit a solo home run over the left field fence to make the score 4-0.

River Falls added another run in the second inning when Hayley Buchanan started things with a single and a stolen base.  Olson would bring her home on a single up the middle, making the score 5-0.

The Yellowjackets were touched up for another run in the third inning when Ryder and Jessie Bester reached on base with singles.  The Yellowjackets intentionally walked Sarah Bohlen to load the bases.  Lubahn finished the job with a sacrifice fly, scoring Ryder to push the score to 6-0.

The Falcons continued scoring in the fourth inning when Lubahn reached on an error and later stole second.  Lubahn came home on a two-run home run by Olson to make the score 8-0.  Later Goettl walked and Ryder singled to put runners on the corners.  Ryder later stole second base which made way for Bester's two-run single, to make the final score 10-0.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) got the start on the rubber, pitching three innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out two.  Taylor VanDamme (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) and Chelsey Jarzin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) recorded the only hits for the Yellowjackets.

Box Score

The Falcons put the finishing touches on the sweep, downing the Yellowjackets 4-0 in game two.

River Falls came up with two runs in the game's opening inning when Buchanan singled up the middle and later moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Lubahn.  After an Olson walk Goettl drove in Buchanan to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.  The Falcons added another run when Goettl was caught in a rundown between first and second, staying alive long enough to score Olson and push the lead to 2-0.

The Falcons added two more runs in the fourth inning when Jamie Klein and Liz Buckley hit back-to-back singles.  Ryder later drove in Klein and Buckley with a single to left field to make the score 4-0.

Le Bard got the pitching start for the Yellowjackets, hurling six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while walking one batter.  Elle Niemala was the only Yellowjacket with a multiple hit game, coming up with two hits.

The Yellowjackets (7-13, 1-5 WIAC) will take the road to UW-Stout on Sunday (Apr. 15).  First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
