Box Score

SUPERIOR, WIS.—The Yellowjackets prevailed through the cold and rainy weather at Liebaert Field in Superior as they outscored UW-Stevens Point 6-1 in the first game of Saturday's WIAC doubleheader.

The Yellowjackets got things going in the first inning when Taylor VanDamme (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) led off with a single to right field.  Chelsey Jarzin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) followed that up with a walk and for Ashlee Olson (Superior, Wis./Superior High School), bunted both runners into scoring position.  Both runners scored when Elle Niemala reached on an error to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead.

Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) continued the offensive attack in the second inning with a sharp single to left field.  Kayla Anderson (Clayton, Wis./Clayton High School) replaced Brugman on first after a fielder's choice and came around to score on VanDamme's triple to right field, widening, the Yellowjacket lead to 3-0.

The Yellowjackets added two more runs in the third inning when Kayla Blom (Alborn, Minn./Albrook High School) walked, and Brugman singled to put two runners on for Anderson, who brought both runners home with a double, to make the score 5-0.

UW-Stevens Point responded with a run in the fourth inning when Bekah Rennicke singled and Kelly Arndt reached on an error.  Katie Schulfer was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ashley Kluck, whose sacrifice fly scored Rennicke to narrow the Yellowjacket lead to 5-1.

The Yellowjackets added another run in the fifth inning when Blom laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Niemala and Garay, who both previously walked, into scoring position.  Niemala came home on a Brugman fielder's choice to make the final score 6-1.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) went the distance on the rubber, allowing a run on four hits while walking three and striking out three.  Brugman and VanDamme led the Yellowjackets offensively with two hits each.

VanDamme led off the bottom of the first with a triple to left field and she would score on an Olson triple to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0.  Olson scored on a wild pitch to widen the margin to 2-0.  Niemala followed that up with a walk and was waved all the way home on a Blom double to make the score 3-0.  Brugman closed out the scoring in the inning when she ripped a single to right field that scored Blom to give the Yellowjackets a comfortable 4-0 lead after one.
