Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis.—The Yellowjackets weren't able to build on their Saturday sweep of UW-Stevens Point as they lost game one of a WIAC doubleheader to UW-Eau Claire 10-1.

The Blugolds touched up the Yellowjackets for three runs in the first inning when Jenny Hess led off with a bunt single.  She later stole second, and then scored when Taylor Pierce reached on an error to put the Blugolds up 1-0.  Sarah Fern was hit by a pitch and Emily Muller bunted for a single to lead the bases.  Nikki Bromelkamp would follow, smacking a single to right field, scoring Pierce and Fern to make the score 3-0.

The Yellowjackets came up with their only run of the game in the fourth inning when Chelsey Jarzin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) singled, and Ashlee Olson (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) walked to put runners on first and second.  Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) drove home Jarzin with an infield single to narrow the Blugold lead to 3-1.

Pierce and Fischer set the tone for Eau Claire in the fifth inning when they hit back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners.  Muller came up with a sacrifice fly, moving Pierce to third.  Bromelkamp drove Pierce in with a single to give Eau Claire a comfortable 4-1 lead.  Fischer eventually scored when Jess Freagon reached on an error to widen the Blugold lead to 5-1.

The Blugolds added to the lead in the sixth inning when Pierce singled to left field.  Fischer was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  Sarah Fern cleared the bases, hitting a three-run home run over the left field fence to make the score 8-1.

Freagon continued to help the Blugold offense in the seventh inning when she hit a solo home run to make the score 9-1.  The Yellowjackets made a pitching change at this point, with Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) taking over, but she didn't fare much better.  Fischer closed out the scoring for the Blugolds when she hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Amanda Houle, who previously singled, to make the score 10-1.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) pitched six innings, allowing ten runs (seven earned) on ten hits while walking two and striking out two.  Jarzin, Olson, Garay, and Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) all had a hit for the Yellowjackets.

Eau Claire 4, Yellowjackets 2
Box Score

The Yellowjackets came up with a rally in the seventh inning, but came up short and fell 4-2 in game two.

The Blugolds scored two runs in the second inning when Fern led off with a single.  Muller followed that up with an infield single.  Fern and Muller both advanced on a wild pitch, and Freagon intentionally walked to load the bases.  Casey Arnold came up big, driving in Muller and Nelson (who pinch ran for Fern) to give the Blugolds a 2-0 lead.

Fischer added a run for the Blugolds in the third inning when she hit a line drive home run over the left field fence to make the score 3-0.

Freagon hit her second home run of the day in the fourth inning to widen the Blugold lead to 4-0.

The Yellowjackets came up with two runs in the last of the seventh when Haider singled and Sarah Stansfield (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown High School) walked to put runners on first and second.  Haider scored when Taylor VanDamme (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) reached on an error to make the score 4-1.  The Yellowjackets scored another run when Olson reached on an error that scored Stansfield to narrow the scoring margin to 4-2.  The Yellowjackets got the tying run on base, but the rally was killed when the Blugolds retired the side.

Le Bard started game two on the rubber, pitching five innings.  She gave up four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out four.  Garay pitched the final two innings, walking one batter.  VanDamme, Jarzin, Haider, Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette), and Kayla Anderson (Clayton, Wis./Clayton High School) each had a hit for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (10-17, 4-8 WIAC) will return to action on Wednesday, April 25 at Liebaert Field where they will face Northland College (WI).  First pitch is at 3:00 p.m. and can be viewed live via webcast at www.ifan.tv.
