Whitewater 3, Yellowjackets 2
Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis.—The Yellowjackets came into Saturday afternoon jockeying for position in the WIAC standings, hoping to take a step toward becoming eligible for the WIAC playoffs.  The top team in the WIAC had other ideas, however, as they dropped game one to UW-Whitewater 3-2.

The Yellowjackets were first to score when Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) and Kayla Blom (Alborn, Minn./Albrook High School) produced back-to-back hits and advanced to second and third on a Kayla Anderson (Clayton, Wis./Clayton High School) ground out.  Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) followed with a double over the center fielder's head, scoring Blom and Garay to put the Yellowjackets up 2-0.

The Warhawks came back with two runs of their own in the third inning when Kelly McGrail smacked a single up the middle and moved to second base on an Amanda Mertes sacrifice bunt.  McGrail would steal third base before scoring on a Mimi Ramirez single to make the score 2-1.  Ramirez came around to score on an Emily Epifanio double to tie the game 2-2.

It took until the eighth inning before someone would score again.  It was the Warhawks who came up with that run when Paige Evangelista reached on a Yellowjacket error, followed by an Epifanio single to put runners on first and second.  Sammie Seamon then played the role of hero for the Warhawks, driving in the game-winning run with a single that scored Darcy Foreman (pinch runner for Evangelista) to give the Warhawks a 3-2 lead and, eventually, the win.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) pitched a complete game for the Yellowjackets, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out six. Taylor VanDamme (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) led the Yellowjacket offense with two hits.

Whitewater 9, Yellowjackets 1
Box Score

The Yellowjackets weren't able to bounce back from the heartbreaker in game one as they lost game two 9-1.

The Warhawks scored their first run in the second inning when Laura Eichenold hit an infield single and eventually advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.  This made things easier for Seamon, who hit a single that brought home Eichenold to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.

One more run was added by the Warhawks in the third inning when Mertes, Ramirez, and Evangelista came up with three straight singles to load the bases.  Mertes would score on a fielder's choice by Epifanio to widen the Warhawk lead to 2-0.

The Warhawks' hot bats continued in the fourth inning when Morgan Krisch doubled and moved to third base on a Joanne Jablonski groundout.  McGrail drove in Krisch on a single to make the score 3-0.  With McGrail on base, Ramirez hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to right field that made the score 5-0.

Garay took over the pitching for the Yellowjackets to start the fifth inning. The Warhawks loaded the bases right off the bat when Epifanio and Eichenold singled and Seamon walked.  Krisch was up to bat next, producing a two-run single up the middle to widen the score to 7-0.  The Warhawks added their eighth run when Seamon scored on a bad throw.  McGrail came up with a sacrifice fly that scored Sarah Fisher to make the score 9-0.

The Yellowjackets answered with a run when Ashlee Olson (Superior, Wis./Superior High School), Elle Niemala, and Garay came up with three straight hits.  Blom drove in Olson with a sacrifice fly to make the score 9-1.

Le Bard pitched the first four innings for the Yellowjackets, allowing five runs on nine hits while walking one batter.  Garay threw the final inning, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits while walking a batter.  Olson led the Yellowjackets with two hits.

The Yellowjackets (11-19, 4-10 WIAC) will close out the regular season on Sunday, April 29 at Liebaert Field where they will face UW-Oshkosh.  First pitch is at 12:00 p.m. and can be viewed live via webcast at www.ifan.tv.
